Nor does one think, "I will perform the unobstructed function of eye consciousness." And the arising attention does not think, "I will perform the mental function of eye consciousness." Nor does eye consciousness think, "I am produced by these causes." However, because these causes exist, eye consciousness will arise. Similarly, the remaining faculties should be applied accordingly. Therefore, no dharma transmigrates from this world to the next, but because the causes and conditions are complete, the fruition of karma also manifests. For example, when the image of a face appears on the surface of a well-polished mirror, the face does not transmigrate to the surface of the mirror, but because the causes and conditions are complete, the face also manifests. Similarly, no one dies and transmigrates from here, nor is born elsewhere, but because the causes and conditions are complete, the fruition of karma also manifests. For example, the orb of the moon travels from forty-two thousand yojanas, but when the image of the moon's orb appears in a small vessel filled with water, the moon's orb does not transmigrate from that place, nor does it enter the small vessel filled with water, but because the causes and conditions are complete, the moon's orb also manifests. Similarly, no one dies and transmigrates from here, nor is born elsewhere, but because the causes and conditions are complete, the fruition of karma also manifests. For example, fire does not burn if the causes and conditions are incomplete, but it burns when the causes and conditions are assembled. Similarly, for ownerless dharmas, selflessness, non-attachment, that which is like space, the nature of illusion, etc., because the causes and conditions are complete, in the place of birth, the connecting mother's womb, the seed produced by karma and afflictions, the sprout of name and form produced by consciousness, manifestly comes into being. Therefore, internal dependent origination should be seen as related to conditions. Regarding that, internal dependent origination

One should observe five aspects of dependent arising. What are the five? Impermanence, non-cessation, non-transfer, the arising of a great result from a small cause, and a similar continuum. How is it impermanent? Because the final aggregates of death are different, and those belonging to arising are also different. What are the final aggregates of death? Those are not the ones belonging to arising. The final aggregates of death cease, and the aggregates belonging to arising arise, therefore it is impermanent. How is it non-cessation? The aggregates belonging to arising do not arise from the final aggregates of death that have previously ceased. Nor do they arise from those that have not ceased. The final aggregates of death cease, and at that very moment, the aggregates belonging to arising arise like the rise and fall of a balance scale, therefore it is non-cessation. How is it non-transfer? From different classes of sentient beings, the arising into a birth with similar karmic results is manifestly accomplished, therefore it is non-transfer. How does a great result arise from a small cause? From performing a small action, one experiences the maturation of a great result, therefore a great result is manifestly accomplished from a small cause. How does one experience the action that will be experienced? One experiences the maturation that will be experienced in the same way, therefore it is in a continuum similar to it. Venerable Shariputra, whoever, with correct wisdom, constantly and continuously sees this dependent arising, which the Blessed One has correctly proclaimed, as lifeless, separated from life, suchness, unerring, unborn, unarisen, unmade, unconditioned, unobstructed, without object, peaceful, fearless, unseizable, inexhaustible, and of a nature that is not completely pacified, and also correctly sees it as non-existent, accumulating, hollow, without essence, disease, sores, pain, sin, impermanent, suffering, empty, and without self, has he then transcended the self?

Or does it arise in the past? Or did I not arise in the past? What did I become in the past? What was I like in the past? Like this, one does not contemplate the past extreme. Will it arise in the future? Or will it not arise in the future? What will it become in the future? What will it be like in the future? Like this, one does not contemplate the future extreme. What is this? What is this like? What is there? What will it become? Where do these sentient beings come from? Where will they go after dying from here? Like this, one does not contemplate what is arising now. Whatever different views are held by ascetics or Brahmins in the world, such as: those who cling to self, or those who cling to sentient beings, or those who cling to life, or those who cling to a person, or those who cling to auspicious signs and good fortune, whatever they may be, especially those wavering that are separated from wavering, at that time, he will abandon those wavering, and after fully knowing, he will cut them off from the root, and like the top of a palm tree, he will become of an unmanifest nature, becoming of a nature of dharma that neither arises nor ceases later. Reverend Shariputra, if someone possesses such patience for the Dharma, and correctly understands dependent origination, then for him, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed Guide of Beings to be Tamed, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, will be prophesied to attain Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment. After Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya spoke these words, the venerable Shariputra, and the world with gods, humans, asuras, gandharvas, etc., rejoiced, and praised what was spoken by Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya. The Great Vehicle Sutra "The Holy Sālu Sprout" is complete. The Great Vehicle Sutra "The Holy Sālu Sprout".
