Because of attachment to false dharmas, because of attachment to what is not true, it is called the aggregate of formations. If the bodhisattvas who uphold the world examine this as it truly is, then the essence of formations does not exist, because it is extremely weak, and it is said and designated as the aggregate of formations from the combination of many causes and conditions, and thus it is realized that there is no truly existing aggregate of formations. No aggregate is the aggregate of formations. Not born from the beginning is the aggregate of formations. No self-nature is the aggregate of formations. The former limit of formations is also without object. The latter limit is also without object. The middle limit is also without object. Because they do not abide, formations are of the nature of arising and ceasing in a single instant. Bodhisattvas who uphold the world thus truly realize that the aggregate of formations is emptiness, without object, without solid self-nature, and that even a hair's breadth is without object. Having thought thus, foolish ordinary beings are bound by meaningless dharmas, bound by the aggregate of formations, and bound by attachment, and they create formations through the doors of body, speech, and mind. They create the formation of self, and they create the formation of what belongs to self. By creating such actions, they are bound by the aggregate of formations, but they do not know that the aggregate of formations itself is ignorance and delusion, and therefore they think of the aggregate of formations as real. Thus, being controlled by perversion, they are attached to and grasped by it. When that person is thus attached to and grasps the aggregate of formations, sometimes it is the formation of pleasure, sometimes it is the formation of suffering, and sometimes it is the formation of neither pleasure nor suffering. When that person forms pleasure, he obtains a body of pleasure. When he forms suffering, he obtains a body of suffering. When he forms neither pleasure nor suffering, he obtains a body of neither pleasure nor suffering. When that person obtains a body of pleasure, he generates desire for it. When he obtains a body of suffering, he generates hatred.

By obtaining a body that is neither divine nor suffering, ignorance is generated. That person, being thus controlled by desire, hatred, and ignorance, does not see the faults of conditioned phenomena, and the actions of body, speech, and mind are impure. That person, being thus impure in body, speech, and mind, falls into an impure path, such as sentient beings in hell, animals, and hungry ghosts. If one is liberated from that for a moment and is born as a god or human, one is still very attached to the actions of body, speech, and mind, and is extremely attached to the aggregate of conditioned phenomena. Bodhisattvas, great beings, thus realize things as they truly are. We should not imitate the actions of ordinary people, but we should train in pure actions of body, speech, and mind, and not be attached to the aggregate of conditioned phenomena. We should carefully examine the faults of the aggregate of conditioned phenomena and seek the path that arises from the aggregate of conditioned phenomena. To realize in this way is called realizing the aggregate of conditioned phenomena as it truly is, which is to realize the impermanence of the aggregate of conditioned phenomena. At that time, one does not grasp, desire, or cling to conditioned phenomena, the arising of conditioned phenomena, the cessation of conditioned phenomena, or the path to the cessation of conditioned phenomena. One does not desire or cling to conditioned phenomena. One does not desire the aggregate of conditioned phenomena. When one realizes in this way, one is separated from the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, and one realizes that even conditioned phenomena do not have a path to the aggregate of conditioned phenomena, and by realizing emptiness in all conditioned phenomena, one becomes weary and fearful of all conditioned phenomena and generates a mind of renunciation. One only focuses on pure actions of body, speech, and mind. By destroying the characteristics of conditioned phenomena and being far removed from the characteristics of the aggregate of conditioned phenomena, whatever body that person obtains becomes completely pure. Why is that? Because that person's bodily actions are completely pure, their verbal actions are completely pure, and their mental actions are completely pure.

The action of the body is pure. The action of speech is pure. The action of mind is pure. That person is separated from the aggregate of formations, separated from the characteristics of the aggregate of formations, and the characteristics of the entities of all dharmas are completely destroyed. When contemplating in accordance with reality, one realizes that the aggregates of formations do not come from anywhere, nor do they go anywhere. Formations are not perceived as having the characteristic of definite arising or the characteristic of definite cessation. Therefore, one realizes that formations do not have the characteristics of arising and ceasing, and all formations are not the characteristics of arising and ceasing. That person, having realized that all formations do not have the characteristics of arising and ceasing, generates a mind of weariness and abandonment, and truly understands and comprehends the characteristics of the arising and cessation of all formations. Although one knows that formations are of the nature of non-arising, it is extremely difficult to understand the nature of formations. Why is that? Because, O Holder of the World, the aggregate of formations does not have a definite nature. For example, in a water tree, one cannot find the characteristic of hardness, nor can one find the characteristic of non-hardness. Similarly, one cannot find the characteristic of formations. Similarly, the characteristic of formations is such that one cannot find the characteristic of hardness, nor can one find the characteristic of non-hardness. O Holder of the World, in this way, the great bodhisattvas' discrimination of mindfulness, which also includes the aggregate of formations, is called contemplation. O Holder of the World, how do the great bodhisattvas truly discriminate the aggregate of consciousness? The great bodhisattvas contemplate what is not an aggregate as the aggregate of consciousness, contemplate the inverted aggregate as the aggregate of consciousness, and contemplate the unreal aggregate as the aggregate of consciousness. Why is that? O Holder of the World, the aggregate of consciousness arises from inversion, is bound by unreal causes, exists due to previous karma, and depends on present conditions.
