giving. Because giving precedes, that vehicle is giving alms to the miserly. Because of being thoroughly seized by great compassion, that vehicle is giving morality to those with bad behavior. Because there is no anger towards all sentient beings, that vehicle is giving patience to those with harmful minds. Because the firm armor is not abandoned, that vehicle is giving diligence to the lazy. Because the mind is subdued, peaceful, and workable, that vehicle is giving meditation to those with distracted minds. Because all sentient beings are engaged in listening, that vehicle is giving wisdom to those with corrupt wisdom. Because all sins are not committed, that vehicle accomplishes all happiness and eliminates all suffering. That vehicle shows the wisdom of the Buddha with immaculate wisdom, universally shows immaculate wisdom, and is the pinnacle of all vehicles, therefore it is called the Great Vehicle. When this Dharma category was taught, twelve myriads of beings generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, and said: We also enter the Great Vehicle, may we place immeasurable sentient beings in this Great Vehicle. Then, the Jewel Daughter asked the Blessed One: Blessed One, what are the obstacles that prevent the Great Vehicle from quickly realizing omniscience? After asking this, the Blessed One said to the Jewel Daughter: Daughter, there are thirty-two obstacles to the Great Vehicle, and because of those obstacles, omniscience cannot be quickly realized. What are the thirty-two? They are: desiring the Hearer Vehicle, desiring the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, desiring the position of Indra and Brahma, desiring to manifest the position of Brahma, abiding in birth and practicing pure conduct, being attached to one root of virtue, being stingy towards possessions and wealth, not giving equally to sentient beings, being lax in morality, not protecting the mind of enlightenment, allowing harmful thoughts and anger to lie dormant, being discouraged and forgetful, and not seeking the meaning of listening.

Lacking wisdom, not being noble, increasing pride upon pride, the actions of body, speech, and mind being completely impure, not guarding the sacred Dharma, the teacher concealing the Dharma, abandoning the objects of gathering, abandoning the Dharma that brings true joy, relying on evil friends, not dedicating entirely to enlightenment, not conforming to the three aggregates, being arrogant with small roots of virtue, a mind fallen without means, turning away from the praise of the Three Jewels, thinking of harming Bodhisattvas, abandoning the Dharma not heard before, not understanding the deeds of demons, holding the secret words of distancing from the world, not causing beings to fully mature, being completely weary of samsara. These thirty-two are the true obstacles to the Great Vehicle. With these obstacles, one will certainly not quickly attain omniscience. Although it is so, daughter, as great as the qualities of the Great Vehicle are, so great are its obstacles. Why is that? As great as the faults of conditioned phenomena are, so great are the obstacles to the Great Vehicle. As great as the qualities of Nirvana are, so great are the qualities and praises of the Great Vehicle. As great as the qualities and praises of the Great Vehicle are, so great is the Tathagata's complete knowledge of the afflictions close to the mind. All of these are obstacles to the Great Vehicle. As great as the Tathagata's complete knowledge of the qualities of the Buddha are, so great are the praises and qualities of the Great Vehicle. Daughter, therefore, in any case, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should completely abandon the Dharma that has become an affliction of the Great Vehicle. One should rely on, cultivate, and increase the Dharma that makes the Great Vehicle pure. What is the Dharma that makes the Great Vehicle pure? Daughter, these thirty-two Dharmas are what make the Great Vehicle pure. What are the thirty-two? They are: becoming a virtuous friend to all beings without being asked, and...
