is its nature. Why is that? Subhuti, what do you think about this? If there is no conceptualization, will attachment, hatred, and delusion arise? He said: That is not so. He said: That which does not conceptualize and does not discriminate is unborn. That which is unborn is nature. This is the nature of attachment, hatred, and delusion. The venerable Subhuti asked, "What is called the nature of mind?" He said, "Luminosity is the nature of mind. In that luminosity of mind, there is no attachment, hatred, or delusion." He said, "Son of good family, from where do those afflictions that arise, arise?" He said, "Venerable Subhuti, afflictions arise from perversion, but the nature of mind is never completely afflicted." Venerable Subhuti, if the nature of mind were completely afflicted, then nothing would ever become completely pure. Because the nature of mind is not completely afflicted, it is called purification through the complete knowledge of afflictions. Subhuti said, "Son of good family, how is it that afflictions are completely known?" He said, "Venerable Subhuti, when conditions are present, they arise; when conditions are absent, they do not arise. To attend to this properly is to completely know afflictions." He said, "Son of good family, how does a Bodhisattva strive properly?" He said, "Venerable Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva abides without being associated with all fabrications, then he is striving properly." Venerable Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva teaches the Dharma of liberation by the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, but does not fall into that liberation, this is also the Bodhisattva's proper practice. Venerable Subhuti, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva comprehends the pacification of the afflictions of all beings through the pacification of his own afflictions, that is also his proper practice. Furthermore, when a Bodhisattva sees fabrication in non-fabrication, and non-fabrication in fabrication, that is also

is the proper application of a Bodhisattva. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the son of the Naga king, Good Transformation, "Son of good family, what is it like to see non-application in the application of a Bodhisattva, and to see application in non-application?" He said, "Venerable Subhuti, whatever is between the eye and form, from mind to Dharma, is seen as non-application by the principle that the Dharma realm is non-dual. What is called non-application is not joining rebirth in the three realms. A Bodhisattva who joins rebirth by means is called application. Venerable Subhuti, a Bodhisattva who strives in this way is called one who strives properly." Then the Blessed One gave the son of the Naga king that praise, saying, "Excellent, excellent! Noble man, it is excellent, excellent that you have shown this proper application of a Bodhisattva by the power of the Buddha. Those Bodhisattvas who strive properly in this Great Vehicle are seen as certain to enter into omniscience." Then the son of the Naga king, Good Transformation, said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha with a mind free from confusion?" He replied, "Son of good family, because a Bodhisattva knows that all Dharmas are without self, without sentient beings, without life, and without person, and does not see form, does not see characteristics, does not see Dharmas, but truly sees the Tathagata, such a one takes refuge in the Buddha with a mind free from confusion. Whatever is the Dharmata of the Tathagata is the Dharmadhatu. Whatever is the Dharmadhatu is called following all things. Thus, seeing all Dharmas as following the Dharmadhatu, such a one takes refuge in the Dharma with a mind free from confusion. One who meditates well on the unconditioned Dharmadhatu, and teaches the unconditioned in the Hearer Vehicle, and the conditioned.

I, like this non-dual unconditioned mind, take refuge in the Sangha with a mind free from defilements. When this teaching was being expounded, the son of the dragon king, having manifested in various forms, obtained great forbearance for the Dharma that accords with it. Then, the dragon king Anavatapta, together with his retinue of wives, together with his sons, together with his relatives and retinue, took refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha with all things, and offered his own abode to the Blessed One, together with the Sangha of monks, and requested thus: "Blessed One, my aspiration is this: from this abode of mine, four great rivers flow, flowing into the four great oceans, may those great oceans, and the Blessed One, may those two-legged beings, four-legged beings, many-legged beings, deer, and birds who seek these four great rivers, through this cause, may they become unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and fully awakened. May those who aspire to enlightenment also be liberated through this cause." Then, at that time, the Buddha, the Blessed One, smiled. This is the Dharma nature of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, at the time when they smile. Then, from the door of the Blessed One's mouth, rays of light of various colors arose and illuminated the boundless and limitless realms of the world, and then returned and set into the crown of the Thus-Gone One's head. Then, the venerable Ananda asked the Blessed One in verse: "Incomparable, possessing a beautiful form, delightful to behold, supreme being, Blessed One, best of men, transcending the world, lamp of the world, the meaning of the radiant smile, please tell me. Possessing a hundred merits, surpassing in merit, surpassing in wisdom, illuminating with wisdom, unequaled Dharma king, possessing the teachings of the Dharma, Blessed One, show for what reason you smile. Seeing the truth, always delighting in the truth, senses pacified, abiding in peace, gone to the other shore, utterly peaceful, delighting in peaceful abiding, please tell me the meaning of the smile that perfects qualities. Possessing gentle speech, uttering the voice of Brahma, like the sound of many excellent birds and the sound of musical instruments, a melodious voice with all the branches of sound complete, why does the Sage smile?"
