They are not tainted by those faults. Lodrö Gyamtso (Tibetan: བློ་གྲོས་རྒྱ་མཚོ།) asked: Blessed One, if it is a root of virtue, why is it called afflictions? The Blessed One replied: Lodrö Gyamtso, it is like this, Bodhisattvas mingle with the three realms through those afflictions, and although the three realms arise from afflictions, Bodhisattvas are skilled in means, and because they increase the power of the roots of virtue, they intentionally mingle with the three realms. Therefore, it is called afflictions that are equal to the roots of virtue. It is said so because they mingle with the three realms, but the mind is not afflicted by afflictions. Lodrö Gyamtso, for example, a merchant or householder has a beloved, cherished, pleasing, agreeable, and only son. That child, being young, falls into a dirty well while playing. Then, the child's mother, friends, and relatives see the child fall into the dirty well. Having seen it, they cry out loudly, lamenting and wailing, but they do not enter the dirty well to pull out the only son. Then, the child's father comes, and he sees the only son fall into the dirty well, and having seen it, he loves and cherishes the only son from the depths of his heart, without scolding, but quickly and swiftly jumps into the dirty well. Pulling out the only son, this is an example made to help you, Lodrö Gyamtso, understand the meaning. So, what is the meaning to be seen here? Lodrö Gyamtso, the dirty well is another way of saying the three realms. The only son is another way of saying all sentient beings, and Bodhisattvas perceive them as their only son. The mother, friends, and relatives are another way of saying the individuals of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer vehicles. When they see sentient beings fallen into samsara, they only lament and wail, but they are unable to liberate them. The merchant or householder is another way of saying the Bodhisattva. Their minds are pure and stainless, free from defilements, and are unconditioned.

Even though the Dharma is manifest, they consciously take rebirth in the three realms in order to fully ripen sentient beings. Ocean of Intelligence, this is the great compassion of the Bodhisattvas, who, although completely liberated from all the bonds of affliction, skillfully take rebirth in samsara, and because they are completely grasped by wisdom, their own afflictions cannot harm them, and in order to abandon all the bonds of affliction, they also teach the Dharma to sentient beings. The Bodhisattva Ocean of Intelligence asked: Blessed One, the Bodhisattvas whose minds are without stain and free from stain, do not despise samsara, and because they realize the profound Dharma as it is, they do not fall into the unconditioned, nor do they strive to obtain the fruit; this is doing what is difficult to do! The Blessed One said: Ocean of Intelligence, this is the path of the Bodhisattvas who are fully endowed with two branches: the Perfection of Wisdom and Skillful Means. Ocean of Intelligence, when the Bodhisattva's mind is without stain, free from stain, and becomes pure, this is his Perfection of Wisdom. Ocean of Intelligence, when the Bodhisattva does not despise samsara and takes rebirth again in order to fully ripen sentient beings, this is his Skillful Means. Ocean of Intelligence, furthermore, when the Bodhisattva individually realizes that all conditioned phenomena are emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, non-fabrication, unborn, and unceasing, this is his Perfection of Wisdom. When, with great compassion as the guide, one does not fall into the unconditioned, nor does one strive to obtain the fruit, this is his Skillful Means. Ocean of Intelligence, furthermore, when the Bodhisattva, because of the equality of the three times, does not see any phenomena that can be distinguished, the equality of the Dharmadhatu is the equality of the realm of sentient beings, the equality of the realm of sentient beings is the equality of the realm of Nirvana, and the equality of the realm of Nirvana is the equality of the Dharma.

The equality of realms: entering the realm of Dharma, therefore entering into equality, this is its perfection of wisdom. When one thoroughly knows the realm of sentient beings as one, and also does not manifest the realm of nirvana, and looking at the realm of sentient beings also does not change into not looking at the realm of Dharma, this is its skillful means. Son of good family, furthermore, pure giving is wisdom. Pure dedication is skillful means. Pure morality, patience, diligence, and meditation are wisdom. Pure dedication is skillful means. In short, all pure roots of virtue are wisdom. Pure dedication is skillful means. Ocean of Wisdom asked: Blessed One, what is the pure root of virtue of a Bodhisattva? What is pure dedication? What is pure wisdom? What is pure skillful means? The Blessed One replied: Ocean of Wisdom, pure root of virtue is those roots of virtue, etc., that are free from views of self, sentient beings, life, nourishment, person, and individual. Pure dedication is to dedicate those roots of virtue to enlightenment by being completely familiar with emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. Pure wisdom is the wisdom that knows the superior and non-superior faculties of all sentient beings. Pure skillful means is being skilled in teaching the Dharma appropriately to each of all sentient beings. Ocean of Wisdom, furthermore, pure root of virtue is all those roots of virtue, etc., that do not abide in all births of wandering in existence. Pure dedication is to dedicate those roots of virtue to the Great Vehicle by truly engaging in all vehicles, free from the attention of all Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Pure wisdom is to completely destroy all defilements that have become the connection of habitual tendencies. Pure skillful means is to cause those sentient beings who are to be tamed to truly uphold the Great Vehicle because it is in accordance with the meaning. Furthermore, pure root of virtue is like this: inexhaustible enjoyment and a jewel in hand. Pure dedication is what
