Chapter Ten: The Chapter of Past Events. Chapter Ten: The Chapter of Past Events. Then, the Bodhisattva Ocean of Intelligence (blo gros rgya mtsho) said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, it is difficult for a Bodhisattva to keep so many precepts without transgressing them. Blessed One, even so, a Bodhisattva should seek to be skilled in all dedication and skillful means. Why is that? Blessed One, because through skillful means, even if a Bodhisattva enters into meditation, liberation, samadhi, and equipoise, he will not be disturbed by meditation, liberation, samadhi, and equipoise. Because the one skilled in skillful means, even if he shows all actions, will not fall into the fault of action. Even if he abides in the equality of Dharma, in order to give those beings with wrong thoughts a true understanding, he will also teach the Dharma, and until his aspirations are not fulfilled, he will not fall into self-grasping. After he said this, the Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Ocean of Intelligence: "Ocean of Intelligence, it is just so. Just as you said, a Bodhisattva should seek to be skilled in skillful means in all ways. Why is that? Ocean of Intelligence, a Bodhisattva who is skilled in skillful means has enlightenment, but one who is not skilled in skillful means does not have enlightenment. Ocean of Intelligence, for example, in one container, put three kinds of colors: one is blue, one is red, and one is yellow like the color of gold. Then cover the paint container with three kinds of cloth: one is covered with blue fine cloth, one is covered with red fine cloth, and one is covered with yellow priceless jewel cloth like the color of gold. Put these in the same container and stir them, and they will absorb the paint according to the way they are covered. Whatever is covered with blue paint will become blue. Whatever is covered with red paint will become red. Whatever is covered with yellow like gold will

Even if the transformed color becomes golden yellow, there will be no distinction for that container. Ocean of Wisdom, similarly, in the same container of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, three types of individuals are accommodated: one is a practitioner of the Hearer Vehicle, one is a practitioner of the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, and one is a practitioner who has truly entered the Great Vehicle. Placing them within, they are all included. No matter who accumulates what kind of thoughts and mental colors, it will equally and completely grasp the colors of wisdom, yet for the container of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, there is no distinction whatsoever. Therefore, one can regard coarse cotton cloth as the practitioner of the Hearer Vehicle, fine cotton cloth as the practitioner of the Solitary Realizer Vehicle, and priceless fine silk as the practitioner who has truly entered the Great Vehicle. Ocean of Wisdom, phenomena are without essence, without a maker, without self, without sentient beings, without life, without person, without a lord. Like this, no matter how one wants to practice, even if practiced, it is not thought, but one must look at that state which is not conceptualization. Ocean of Wisdom, for a Bodhisattva who has faith in practicing these phenomena, he will not become weary of any phenomenon. Because such a vision of wisdom is extremely pure, it does not cause benefit or harm to anyone. Like this, if one can truly understand the Dharma-nature of all phenomena as they are, then one will not abandon the armor of great compassion. Ocean of Wisdom, it is like, for example, a priceless, very clear, very clean, very immaculate jewel, lapis lazuli, is placed in mud for a thousand years. After a thousand years have passed, it is taken out of the mud, washed clean, thoroughly purified, and wiped clean. It will become very clean, very thoroughly clean, very clear, and it itself will not abandon the nature of that clean and immaculate jewel. Ocean of Wisdom, similarly, a Bodhisattva is also able to thoroughly know that the mind of all sentient beings is luminous by nature, and is also able to see that it is defiled by sudden adventitious afflictions. To this, the Bodhisattva

The Bodhisattva thinks thus: "These afflictions are not inherent in the naturally luminous mind of sentient beings; these afflictions arise solely from unreal conceptualizations. Therefore, I can teach the Dharma to those sentient beings to eliminate their sudden afflictions." Thinking this, he does not generate a timid mind; rather, he generates an even stronger mind to liberate all sentient beings thoroughly. He also thinks thus: "These afflictions have no strength or power at all; these afflictions are powerless and weak. They do not abide in reality at all; these afflictions are unreal conceptualizations. If one examines them with proper attention, as they truly are, one will not be disturbed. Therefore, I will never mix with them; I should examine them in this way." It is good not to mix with afflictions; it is not good to mix with them. If I were to mix with afflictions, how could I teach the Dharma to those sentient beings who are bound by the bonds of affliction in order to eliminate the bonds of affliction? I should not mix with afflictions, and I should teach the Dharma to sentient beings in order to eliminate the bonds of affliction. In order to fully ripen sentient beings, I should mix with those afflictions that perpetuate samsara and are associated with roots of virtue." What are those afflictions that perpetuate samsara and are associated with roots of virtue? They are, for example, never being satisfied with fully seeking the accumulation of merit, consciously taking rebirth in samsara, wishing to meet the Buddhas, never being weary of fully ripening sentient beings, striving to uphold the sacred Dharma, being delighted in whatever actions sentient beings perform, not abandoning the latent tendencies of desiring the Dharma, and never abandoning the practice of the perfections. Those oceans of wisdom are the afflictions associated with roots of virtue. The Bodhisattva mixes with them, even though they are afflictions.
