It is so. I thought, I shall liberate all sentient beings from all worldly dharmas. If a Bodhisattva abides in this way, then he abides in equanimity. Son of No Craving, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva believes in the emptiness of the realm of Dharma, then he abides in loving-kindness. When he believes that all dharmas are solitary, then he abides in compassion. When he believes that all dharmas are without attachment, without bondage, and without liberation, then he abides in joy. When he believes that all dharmas are without going and without coming, then he abides in equanimity. Son of No Craving, in this way, the Bodhisattva abides in loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Son of No Craving, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva is not afraid of the selflessness of dharmas, then he abides in loving-kindness. When he is not afraid of the solitude of all dharmas, then he abides in compassion. When he is not afraid of the equality of all Buddha-dharmas, then he abides in joy. When he is not afraid of the inexhaustible nature of all Buddha-fields, then he abides in equanimity. Son of No Craving, furthermore, the characteristic of loving-kindness is the absence of hatred. The characteristic of compassion is the absence of universal conduct. The characteristic of joy is the absence of harmful intent. The characteristic of equanimity is the absence of pride and depression. Son of No Craving, furthermore, there are loving-kindness and compassion, but there are also those that are not great loving-kindness and great compassion. What are great loving-kindness and great compassion? They are what all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not have. What do Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas have? They are loving-kindness and compassion, that is, "May all sentient beings be happy." This is loving-kindness and compassion, but not great loving-kindness and great compassion. So, what are great loving-kindness and great compassion? To have an equal mind towards all sentient beings, that is great loving-kindness. What is it that completely liberates all sentient beings from all suffering?

That is great compassion. Abandoning one's own happiness, and deliberately taking birth in existence among sentient beings born in the five realms, that is called great love. The thought of liberating these sentient beings from the evil paths of samsara and placing them on the good path, that is called great compassion. Son of No Craving, therefore, in this way, you should also understand that the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas only have love and compassion, but not great love and great compassion. Son of No Craving, therefore, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should possess great love and great compassion. When this teaching was proclaimed, eight thousand beings generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. They also requested, saying: "Lord, we also wish to abide in these abodes spoken of by this one who has become the youthful Manjushri." Eighty thousand Bodhisattvas obtained this samadhi that gathers all merits. Eight thousand beings generated the stainless and pure Dharma eye towards all dharmas. Then, the Bodhisattva Son of No Craving said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, who possesses the marks of a hundred merits, by what kind of merits are the marks of the Tathagata's hundred merits manifested?" After saying this, the Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Son of No Craving: "Son of No Craving, in worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, however many sentient beings there are, if all those sentient beings were gathered together, they would all possess the accumulation of merit of a Chakravartin. The sum total of the accumulation of merit of the Chakravartins of all those sentient beings is equivalent to that of one Indra, lord of the gods. Son of No Craving, in worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges,
