Those with insight have no arrogance. Absence of arrogance is the truth spoken by the Victorious Ones. Guarding morality, one should not be conceited by it. Hearing the Dharma, one should not be haughty because of it. Those who are of small wisdom are conceited; from that root, their suffering increases. The guide of the world, the all-knowing one, has shown that pride is the root of suffering. Arrogance due to wealth greatly increases suffering. Absence of arrogance leads to the cessation of suffering. Having fully comprehended as many teachings as there are, if one is puffed up by learning and does not guard moral discipline, due to the corruption of moral discipline, one goes to the lower realms, and much learning cannot save one. If one is puffed up by the fame of moral discipline and does not strive to hear much, then when the fruits of moral discipline are completely exhausted, one will again experience great suffering. Even if one meditates on concentration in this world, one does not destroy the perception of self. One's afflictions arise again intensely. While meditating on concentration here through higher conduct, if one thoroughly contemplates the Dharma of selflessness, and if, having examined these, one meditates, then the result is the attainment of Nirvana. Other causes cannot bring about peace. If a person is greatly tormented by many robbers, and desiring to live, tries to flee and run, his feet move but he cannot run fast. Just as he is seized and plundered by the robbers, so too, a foolish person whose moral discipline is corrupted, although he wishes to escape from conditioned things, cannot escape because his moral discipline is corrupted. He is utterly destroyed by sickness, old age, and death. Just as many thousands of barbarians threaten in various ways, so too, from the various doors of afflictions, like barbarians, they destroy the aspects of virtue. Whoever thoroughly examines the aggregates as selfless, and is not disheartened even when reviled and beaten, that one does not go under the power of the demon of afflictions. One who knows emptiness has no conflict. Many proclaim the aggregates to be empty, but they do not know how they are selfless. Those who do not know, even if refuted by others, are overcome by the power of anger and speak harsh words. People are sick and their bodies suffer, and sometimes they are not liberated for many years. They are afflicted by chronic illness.

Having arrived, he also sought a doctor to cure all diseases. He sought again and again with diligence, and found a doctor who was skilled and understood well. The doctor also held compassion close, and said, "You should take this medicine." Although he took the medicine, which was plentiful and good, he did not drink the medicine that would heal his illness. It was not that the doctor's words were ineffective, nor that the medicine was at fault, but rather that the patient himself was to blame. Likewise, in this teaching, if there are renunciates who, although they understand all the powers, meditations, and faculties, do not diligently strive in meditation, how can they attain peace without diligent effort? All phenomena are always empty in nature, yet the sons of the Buddhas destroy things. All conditioned existence is completely empty, unlike the nihilistic emptiness accepted by the extremists. The wise do not argue with fools, but abandon fools like paintings. Do not come before me with anger, nor rely on the ways of fools. The wise know the nature of fools and do not associate with either the wise or the foolish. Even if one serves fools well, they will eventually become like enemies. The wise do not trust fools, for the nature of the wise and the foolish are different. The nature and behavior of fools are different, and they have no love for different beings. Even if one speaks words that are meaningful, they do not believe and anger arises. To manifest thus is the way of fools, and knowing this meaning, do not trust them. The union and association of fools with fools is like impurity with impurity, while the wise unite and associate with the wise, like oil and marrow blending together. Without separately contemplating the faults of samsara, they do not enter into the ripening of karma, and because they do not believe the words of the Buddhas, those fools will be cut off and severed. Among the difficult to obtain, it is extremely difficult to obtain, and having obtained it, they are not skilled in the crafts. They become poor and have no wealth, and then, lacking food, they wish to renounce. Having renounced in this Buddha's teaching, they become attached to their begging bowls and robes. Because they are completely seized by evil friends, they do not practice the training of the Sugata. Because they do not see my discipline, the minds of fools do not abide.
