Know this. Just as the moon's reflection in water at night appears in clear, untroubled water, the moon in the water is empty and cannot be grasped. Know that all phenomena are like this. Just as at midday in summer, a person, tormented by thirst, sees a mirage as a mass of water, know that all phenomena are like this. Since there is no water in a mirage, foolish beings desire to drink from it, but they cannot drink the unreal water. Know that all phenomena are like this. Just as when someone splits the trunk of a moist tree, seeking its heartwood, there is no heartwood to be found inside or out, know that all phenomena are like this. The eye, ear, and nose are not valid means of knowledge, nor are the tongue, body, and mind. If these faculties were valid, what use would the noble path be to anyone? Thus, these faculties are not valid, and by their nature, they are inert and uninformative. Therefore, those who desire the path to nirvana should act through the noble path. If one thoroughly examines the beginning of the body, there is no body, nor is there a perception of a body. That which has no body and no perception of a body is called the unconditioned realm. In the dharma of nirvana, there is no dharma, because since it does not exist, it can never exist. 'Exists' and 'does not exist' are terms used by those who conceptualize. Acting in this way does not pacify suffering. 'Exists' and 'does not exist' are both extremes. 'Pure' and 'impure' are also extremes. Therefore, having completely abandoned both extremes, the wise do not even abide in the middle way. 'Exists' and 'does not exist' are causes for dispute. 'Pure' and 'impure' are also causes for dispute. If there is dispute, suffering will not be pacified. If there is no dispute, suffering ceases. Having spoken of mindfulness, the childish are manifestly proud of their bodies. When there is manifest attachment to the body, there is no conceit. One who is without conceit abandons everything. Having spoken of the four meditations, the childish speak of the sphere of meditation. Meditation is without affliction and without conceit. Having understood with wisdom, one thoroughly abandons pride. Having spoken of the four truths, the childish say they have seen the truth.
