Upatissa. After Susthita attained the fruit of Arhatship, he approached the Buddha and gazed at the Blessed One's face without blinking. He bowed his head at the Blessed One's feet, bared one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms, and with sorrow and joy arising simultaneously, he repented of his past misdeeds and reported to the Blessed One, saying: "This wicked body of mine has deceived me for a long time. For a long time, I have been submerged in the darkness of ignorance, wandering in the three realms, and have been taken advantage of by the doctrines of the heretics. Alas! Alas! It has been a great harm! It is by the grace of the Tathagata that I have entered the sacred Dharma. Blessed One, your wisdom is like an ocean, and your great compassion is immeasurable. I feel that even after countless kalpas, I will not be able to repay your kindness." After Susthita reported thus, he shed tears and again reported to the Blessed One, saying: "Blessed One, I am old and frail, and have not yet been liberated from suffering. I am greatly tormented by the suffering of formations. Blessed One, out of compassion, please teach the precepts and be my protector and refuge. Please do not pass into Nirvana for a while." At that time, the Blessed One did not speak and did not grant his request. Susthita did not receive the Blessed One's permission, and his heart was filled with sorrow. He cried out loudly, saying: "Alas! Alas! The world is destroyed! The world is destroyed! Now great terror approaches, and extreme suffering is manifest! Alas! Alas! The merit of sentient beings is exhausted, and the eye of wisdom of right view is dimmed!" Having said this, he beat his chest and stamped his feet, crying until he could barely make a sound, and his body was soaked with blood. He cried out loudly and threw his body on the ground before the Tathagata, where he fainted. After a long time, he regained consciousness and, weeping, again reported to the Blessed One, saying: "Blessed One, I cannot bear to see the Tathagata pass into Nirvana. My heart is filled with sorrow and I am in great pain. I am like an unabandoned tile."

I should not have associated with this malicious body before. O Bhagavan, please pass into Nirvana hereafter. At that time, Extremely Good One, having prayed thus, beat his chest and entered Nirvana right there. At that time, unspeakable and again unspeakable Bodhisattva Mahasattvas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, as well as monks, nuns, and all beings including gods, humans, asuras, etc., in the world, spoke in unison, saying: Alas! Alas! The perfectly enlightened Buddha has abandoned us in one instance, there is no place, no refuge, no protector, no guardian. It is so very sad! Having said this, everyone wept, embracing each other, beating their chests with their fists, fainting and losing their sense of direction, and the entire three-thousandfold great thousandfold world trembled. At that time, the Bhagavan, with a voice endowed with eight qualities, spoke thus to the many assemblies: Do not weep like small children, cease your individual weeping, and do not be disturbed in mind. You should diligently strive for pure intention in this ocean of suffering of conditioned existence, and do not forget the wisdom of mindfulness. Strive to emerge from existence through correct wisdom. Experiencing the body in the three realms is an endless wheel of suffering. Do not become slaves to the king of ignorance and the king of the demons of desire, who control body and mind. Focusing on the realm of action creates the karma of samsara. Attachment, hatred, and ignorance torment us moment by moment, causing us to experience suffering for immeasurable eons. Which wise and intelligent person would not recognize this? You should understand this in this way. From past eons, I have entered the great peaceful aggregates, realms, and sources without existence, completely cutting off samsara, and although I have obtained the qualities of permanence, bliss, self, and purity, like a treasure of precious vajra, I have shown Nirvana in accordance with worldly customs in order to show inconceivable means here. This is also so that ordinary individuals may recognize the body as flash
