If one comes to a doctor, one is easy to cure, one is difficult to cure, and one is incurable, then, son of good family, for these three kinds of patients, which one does the doctor treat first? They replied: World Honored One, first cure the one that is easy to cure, and then cure the other two. Why? Because they are friends and relatives. The example of easy to cure is the Bodhisattva Sangha, the example of difficult to cure is the Shravaka Sangha, and the example of incurable is the heretic. Even if it cannot be immediately transformed into a good result now, it is because of love and affection, in order to generate good results in the next life. Son of good family, for example, if a great king has three horses, one is very docile and strong, one is untamed but strong, and one is tamed or untamed, thin and old, and has no strength. If the king wants to ride, which one does he ride first? They replied: World Honored One, first ride the one that is docile and strong, and then ride the other two. The example of the docile and strong is the Bodhisattva Sangha, the example of the untamed is the Shravaka Sangha, and the example of the untamed and old is the heretic. Even if it does not bring benefits in this life, it is because of love and affection, in order to sow the seeds of goodness for the next life. Son of good family, for example, if a great benefactor wants to give alms to three kinds of people, one is of noble birth, has sharp faculties and is disciplined, one is of middle birth, has dull faculties but is disciplined, and one is of low birth, has dull faculties and is not disciplined. Then, son of good family, to whom does this great benefactor give alms first? They replied: World Honored One, first give alms to the one who is of noble birth, has sharp faculties and is disciplined, and then give alms to the other two. The first example is the Bodhisattva Sangha, the second example is the Shravaka Sangha, and the third example is the heretic. Son of good family, for example, the lion king is fragrant.

When killing a yak, one uses all one's strength and skill to kill it, and it is the same when killing a rabbit. It is not done with just a slight breath. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is also the same. When teaching the Dharma to Bodhisattvas and those with wrong views, there is no difference in what he does. Son of good family, once, when I was staying in Rajagriha, the monk Auspicious Star was my attendant. At that time, in the first part of the night, I was teaching the holy Dharma to Indra, the lord of the gods. Because a servant has to remind the teacher, I was delayed for a long time, and the monk Auspicious Star developed ill will towards me. At that time, the young boys and girls in Rajagriha were crying. If they could not be quieted, their parents would threaten them, saying, "If you don't stop crying, we will send you to the hungry ghost Bakula." Then they would stop crying. At that time, the monk Auspicious Star also threatened me, saying, "Please return to your dwelling quickly, the hungry ghost Bakula is coming." I said to him, "You are very foolish. Have you not heard that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is fearless?" At that time, Indra, the lord of the gods, said to me, "Bhagavan, can such a person also enter the Dharma of the Buddha?" I said to him, "Kaushika, such a person can also enter the Dharma of the Buddha, because he has the Buddha-nature, so he will attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment." I taught the holy Dharma to the monk Auspicious Star, but he had no faith and no mind to retain it. Son of good family, once, when I was staying in a place called the Kashi country, in a city called Shipapura, the monk Auspicious Star was also my attendant. At that time, I intended to go to that city for alms, and countless beings living there were eager to see my form, longing like a thirsty person. The monk Auspicious Star thought of secretly following behind me, to make me disappear. But he was not able to do so, and instead made many beings unhappy.

arose the (bodhi) mind. At that time, I went to the city and saw a naked person at the door of a tavern, with a thin body, eating dregs. The monk Good Star also saw it and said to me: World Honored One, if there are Arhats in the world, then this person is the most supreme. Why? Because this person has neither cause nor effect. I said to him: Fool, haven't you heard? Arhats do not drink alcohol, nor harm people, nor deceive others, nor steal, nor commit adultery. This person has killed his parents and eats dregs, how can he be called an Arhat? This person will fall into the Avici hell as soon as he dies, and be devoured by evil spirits. Arhats are those who have completely cut off the three evil destinies, why do you say he is an Arhat? Good Star also said: The nature of the four elements (earth, water, fire, wind) may change, but there is no possibility of saying that this person will fall into the Avici hell. I said to him: Fool, haven't you heard? The Buddha World Honored One speaks truthfully and without falsehood. Although I explained the Dharma to Good Star in this way, he did not even have a little faith and acceptance. Good son, I also once lived with the monk Good Star in Rajagriha (now Rajgir). At that time, there was a naked person in Rajagriha called "Suffering Transformation," who always said: The afflictions of sentient beings have neither cause nor condition, and the liberation of sentient beings has neither cause nor condition. At that time, the monk Good Star also said to me: World Honored One, if there are Arhats in the world, then this naked person called "Suffering Transformation" is the most supreme. I said to him: Fool, this naked person called "Suffering Transformation" is not a true Arhat, nor is he liberated by the Bodhi of an Arhat. Then, Good Star said to me again: Why would an Arhat be jealous of an Arhat?
