The fruit of that root is Nirvana. I declare that one should strive for Nirvana and ultimately attain Nirvana. Why is that? Ananda, the ripening of offering a single flower to the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is not easily comprehended unless it ultimately leads to Nirvana. Therefore, its miraculous power is great, its benefit is great, its glory is great, and its scope is vast. Ananda, the ripening of such an offering to the Tathagata is immeasurable. Even generating a single thought of joy towards the Tathagata, I declare that it is extremely ultimate, extremely accomplished, blissful, extremely pure, and extremely conducive to the practice of celibacy. Ananda, therefore, a son or daughter of good family who desires the sovereignty of a universal monarch should thus honor, respect, attend to, and make offerings to the Buddha, the Bhagavan. A son or daughter of good family who desires to attain Indra, Brahma, or to be the lord of the gods of the Four Great Kings, as well as the gods of the Thirty-three, the Free from Strife, the Joyful, the Delighting in Emanation, the Controlling Others' Emanations, as well as nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans or non-humans, or even desires to attain the lord of the world of all the worlds, should honor, respect, attend to, and make offerings to the Buddha, the Bhagavan. A son or daughter of good family who desires to attain the level of a Hearer, or desires to attain the level of a Solitary Buddha, or desires to attain the Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Enlightenment, should honor, respect, attend to, and make offerings to the Buddha, the Bhagavan. Ananda, when I was seeking the Unsurpassed Perfect and Complete Enlightenment, I made offerings to many Buddhas, many hundreds of Buddhas, many thousands of Buddhas, many billions of hundreds of thousands of Buddhas, such as robes, food, bedding, medicine for the sick, implements, as well as cushions, walking places, temples, flowers, incense, garlands, and so on.

With unguents and, powders and, garments and, umbrellas and, banners and, victory banners, they revered, respected, served, and made offerings. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, even after they had completely passed into nirvana, also made stupas, and with flowers and, incense and, perfumes and, garlands and, hundreds of thousands of unguents and, songs and, dances and, cymbals and, hundreds of thousands of hand drums, they revered, respected, served, and made offerings, and all those who remembered, relying on this unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, acted for the sake of loving all sentient beings, for the benefit and happiness of gods and humans, for liberating those not liberated, for freeing those not freed, for giving breath to those not breathing, and for causing those not passed into nirvana to pass into nirvana. Kunda, before the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha Dipamkara, I scattered five utpala flowers, and then I obtained the patience of the unborn dharma. Kunda, from the root of virtue I obtained, I experience only a small portion of the ripening of virtue. Do you wish to hear a small portion of the ripening of the root of virtue from scattering those five utpala flowers to the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha Dipamkara? Begged: Bhagavan, I wish to hear! Sugata, I wish to hear! Bhagavan, now is the time to speak and show a small portion of the accumulation of virtue to Dipamkara, Bhagavan, the time has come! Sugata, the time has come! Then, the Bhagavan at that time extended his golden right arm, and from the small finger of his hand arose the fragrance of the heavenly utpala flower. Then, the three thousand great thousand world realms, all the Buddha fields where hundreds of thousands of billions of suns and moons move, were filled with the fragrance of the heavenly utpala flower. Then, the Bhagavan showed such a rare and wonderful dharma to the world with gods, humans, and asuras, and the ripening of the object of meritorious action arising from generosity.
