Chapter Ten: The Merit of Offerings Chapter Ten: The Merit of Offerings Then, the Blessed One again said to the venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, you should also understand these categories in this way. Even if one performs a small amount of virtuous roots towards beings like me, it will not be in vain, and the result of all those virtuous roots of generating a single thought is nirvāṇa. Ultimately, I declare that one will attain nirvāṇa. Ānanda, therefore, in order to extensively explain this meaning, and in any way to cause some faithful and wise sons or daughters of good families to generate great faith in this meaning, to contemplate it universally, to cultivate diligence, and after generating faith, to generate great joy and great delight, I will show you an example. Ānanda, for example, a fisherman holding a fishhook, in order to catch fish, puts a fishhook with bait into a large lake. If the fishhook that is put in is swallowed by a fish, then even if the fish that swallowed the fishhook swims in the lake, it should be known that it is actually on land. Why is that? Because that fish is held by the fisherman with the strong line of the fishhook. If that fish, together with the fishhook, goes into the water, and the line is also connected to the fishhook, then it is both in the water and on land. If the rod is on land and is firmly grasped, then the fisherman will come, know that the fish has been caught by the line, and then he will pull the line, pull the fish onto the land as he pleases, and do joyful things. Ānanda, similarly, if any sentient beings generate faith in the Buddha, the Blessed One, cultivate virtuous roots, make offerings, and even generate just a single thought of faith, then, due to the obscuration of evil deeds, or being obscured by other things, even if sentient beings fall into hell, or the animal realm, or the realm of Yama, or other unfavorable places, when the Buddha, the Blessed One, appears in the world, the wisdom of the Buddha will know that these sentient beings are practitioners of the Bodhisattva Vehicle, these sentient beings are practitioners of the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle, and these sentient beings are practitioners of the Śrāvaka Vehicle.

These sentient beings have made roots of virtue. These sentient beings have severed roots of virtue. These sentient beings are in accordance with the aspect of decline. These sentient beings are in accordance with the aspect of special transformation. These are those who have planted seeds by realizing the pure Dharma. For example, know that this is offering to the Buddha, even generating a single mind endowed with faith, planting seeds with pure virtuous Dharma. By the ripening of what offering, those who generate even just one mind of faith in the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, with the wisdom of the Buddha, with the specialty of generating the mind, liberate them from falling into wrongdoing. Having liberated them, they also place them in the blissful land of Nirvana. Having placed them, they also exhort, 'Noble son, remember that you have generated these roots of virtue towards the Tathagata such and such.' They report, 'Bhagavan, it is so. Sugata, it is so.' They teach, 'Therefore, noble sons, these roots of virtue from offering to the Tathagata are endowed with great fruit and great benefit. Noble sons, those who plant on a great field of merit, such as me, will not be exhausted even for a long time, for hundreds of thousands of billions of kalpas. The fruit of all those roots of virtue is Nirvana, and ultimately they will attain Nirvana.' Ananda, in order to understand the meaning, I have made this example. How should one view the meaning in this? Ananda, the so-called fish is the colloquial term for ordinary people. Ananda, the so-called ocean water is the colloquial term for the ocean of samsara. Ananda, the so-called bait is the colloquial term for generating roots of virtue towards the Tathagata. Ananda, the so-called thread is the colloquial term for the four means of gathering. Ananda, the so-called fisherman is the colloquial term for the Tathagata. Ananda, the so-called live fish is the colloquial term for placing sentient beings in the fruit of Nirvana. Ananda, in this way, you should also
