It should be understood in this way. Whatever offerings are made to the Buddha, unless one attains Nirvana, no matter how long the time, they will not be destroyed, will not be exhausted, and will have no end. Kashyapa, therefore, I will show you other examples of how offerings made to the Buddha are concluded by Nirvana and reach the ultimate end of Nirvana. Kashyapa, there are sentient beings who indulge in desire, cling to feelings, desire to experience, openly praise samsara, delight in samsara, and desire samsara. Therefore, they make offerings to the Buddha, the Blessed One, and dedicate their roots of virtue in order to desire the heavenly realms and to be reborn as humans. There are also sentient beings who, after making offerings to the Buddha, the Blessed One, dedicate their roots of virtue, saying, 'May we never attain Nirvana!' Kashyapa, by means of these roots of virtue, there is no way that these sentient beings cannot attain Nirvana. Why is that? Kashyapa, because the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are the unsurpassed fields of merit, without thatch and thorns, without the defilement of desire and hatred, completely pure. In such a field of merit, no matter how small the seed of virtue, no matter how vast the seed of virtue, no matter how subtle, all these roots of virtue, whether they are transformed into the seed of Bodhi, or transformed into the seed of a Hearer, or transformed into the seed of a Solitary Buddha, will not be deceived. If these roots of virtue are not abandoned, then enjoyment will increase, be perfect, the path to the heavens will be completely purified with joy, and ultimately Nirvana will be attained. Kashyapa, for example, a householder farmer has a field that is free of alkali, free of stumps and thorns, free of rubble and gravel, and has fertile soil. He cultivates it well and tills it with tools. The seeds there are also carefully selected, very intact, not damaged by wind and sun, not broken and shattered, not rotten, and not eaten by insects. He sows these seeds in the field at the appropriate time and waters them at the appropriate time, dries them at the appropriate time, and protects them carefully in all respects.

Then, Ananda, thereafter, a householder farmer, at another time, went to the field, sat on the edge of the field, and said: 'Alas, seed, may you not become a seed! Alas, seed, may you not grow! Do not multiply! I do not need fruit, I do not need harvest.' Ananda, what do you think of this? Can the words of that householder farmer make those seeds no longer seeds? Answer: 'World Honored One, no. Well-gone One, no.' The Buddha said: 'Will the fruit become non-fruit? Will the harvest not be realized?' Answer: 'World Honored One, no. Well-gone One, no.' The Buddha said: 'Ananda, similarly, some people praise existence, love existence, and after making offerings to the Buddha, say this: 'With this root of virtue, may we never completely be liberated from sorrow.' Even if they say this, there is no possibility, no opportunity for them not to be completely liberated from sorrow because of it. Ananda, for the root of virtue generated towards the Buddha, even if they do not wish it, its fruit is liberation from sorrow, I say it will ultimately become liberation from sorrow. Similarly, no matter how much root of virtue is generated from a single thought towards the Buddha, the World Honored One, the fruit of all of these is also liberation from sorrow, I say it will ultimately become liberation from sorrow. Ananda, in the future, there will be kings who do evil and barbarians who appear. Ananda, there, no matter which kings who do evil and barbarians, after seeing the Tathagata's stupa and the Tathagata's image, generate hatred in their hearts, Ananda, even if they do not understand all the Buddha's teachings, and do not understand all the Buddha's qualities, Ananda, when I was practicing the Bodhisattva conduct, I used four things to gather those beings and those lives. What are the four? Giving, loving speech, beneficial conduct, and acting in concert. Ananda, those people, after seeing my stupa, will certainly generate hatred in their hearts. Ananda, the fruit of those people's root of virtue is also liberation from sorrow, I say it will ultimately become liberation from sorrow.
