Venerable One, why do Bodhisattvas have faith in the perfections, and how do they abide in the desire for the ripening fruits of the perfections? Avalokiteśvara, it is for five reasons: the perfections are the cause of supreme happiness and mental ease, the cause of benefiting oneself and others, the cause of desiring their ripening fruits in the future, the basis of being free from all afflictions, and the unchanging nature of reality. Venerable One, what are the individual powers of those perfections? Avalokiteśvara, the individual powers of those perfections are to be understood in four ways: when cultivating the perfections, one thoroughly abandons the opposing factors of miserliness, immoral conduct, mental disturbance, laziness, distraction, and wrong views; one transforms into unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment; in this life, one benefits oneself and all beings; and in the future, one obtains vast and inexhaustible ripening fruits. Venerable One, from what cause do those perfections arise, with what fruit are they endowed, and with what meaning are they endowed? The Venerable One replied: Avalokiteśvara, the perfections arise from the cause of compassion, are endowed with the fruit of desiring ripening fruits and benefiting beings, and are endowed with the great meaning of accomplishing perfect great enlightenment. Venerable One, if Bodhisattvas possess unsparing enjoyment and compassion, why are there poor people in the world? Avalokiteśvara, that is solely due to the faults of beings' own karma. If it were not so, if it were not caused by beings' own misdeeds, how could the world appear to be suffering when they are constantly engaged in activity and possess inexhaustible enjoyment? Avalokiteśvara, for example, the body of a preta is parched with thirst.

That the pretas see the water of the ocean dry up is not the fault of the oceans, but the fault of the fruit of the karma of those pretas themselves. Similarly, the fact that there is no fruit is not the fault of the bodhisattvas' generosity, which is like an ocean, but the fault of the beings themselves, like the pretas, it is the fault of their own karma. Blessed One, with what perfection of wisdom does the bodhisattva hold the very nature of the non-existence of phenomena? Avalokiteshvara, the Lord of Power, holds it with the perfection of wisdom. Blessed One, if the perfection of wisdom holds the very nature of non-existence, then why does it not hold the very nature of existence? Avalokiteshvara, the Lord of Power, I do not say that I hold the non-existence of nature by nature, but without the indication of letters, the non-existence of nature, without letters, individually self-aware, cannot be indicated by letters, therefore it is said that it holds the very nature of non-existence. Blessed One, sometimes it is called pāramitā, sometimes it is called near pāramitā, and sometimes it is called great pāramitā. Blessed One, what is pāramitā? What is near pāramitā? What is great pāramitā? Avalokiteshvara, the Lord of Power, here, the bodhisattva has the virtues of generosity and so on, which have been completely cultivated from countless eons, and afflictions also arise in him, but he cannot suppress them, but he is suppressed by them, such as, being in the stage of application of faith, entering into small and medium faith, this is called pāramitā. Again, from countless eons, he has those very virtues that have been most completely cultivated, and afflictions also arise in him, and he suppresses them, and he is not suppressed by them, such as, starting from the first ground, this is called near pāramitā. Again, from countless eons, he has those very virtues that have been most extremely completely cultivated, and for them, in all times, afflictions

Becoming of the nature of non-arising, that is, from the eighth ground onwards, that is called the great pāramitā. Blessed One, how many kinds of afflictive habitual tendencies are there on those grounds? Avalokiteśvara, there are three kinds. Avalokiteśvara, the one who has destroyed the true friend, that is, on those five grounds, afflictions are co-emergent. The arising companion, the non-co-emergent affliction, arises, at that time, that affliction does not exist, therefore it is called destroying the true friend. The habitual tendency is weak, that is, on the sixth and seventh grounds, there is a small part that arises, and it arises due to the suppression of meditation. The habitual tendency is subtle, that is, on the eighth ground and those above it, all afflictions do not arise at all, and they only remain on the obscuration of knowledge. Blessed One, how many kinds of temporal distinctions are there in the way those habitual tendencies abandon bad states? Avalokiteśvara, there are three kinds, abandoning bad states as if they were on the skin, this is the first and second distinction. Abandoning bad states as if they were on the bark, this is the third. Abandoning bad states as if they were on the heartwood, that is the state of completely no habitual tendencies, I have fully revealed that it is the Buddha ground. Blessed One, how many countless eons will those bad states be abandoned through? Avalokiteśvara, through three countless eons, or through seasons, months, half months, days, suns, hours, half hours, moments, instants, a short while, and countless eons. Blessed One, what is the characteristic of the arising of afflictions of the bodhisattvas on those grounds? What is the fault? What is the merit? I would like to know. Avalokiteśvara, the characteristic of the arising of afflictions of the bodhisattvas is the characteristic of no afflictions at all. What is the reason for that? Because the bodhisattva on the first ground, only individually ascertains, fully realizes all dharmadhātu. Therefore, the bodhisattva
