Because unobstructed wisdom and vision cannot be attained, that limb is not completely perfect. In order to make that limb completely perfect, effort will lead to its attainment, and that limb will be completely perfect. Because that limb is perfect, all limbs are perfect. It should be understood that Avalokiteśvara is comprised of those eleven limbs. Bhagavan, why is the first bhumi called the Extremely Joyful Bhumi? Why are the bhumis up to the Buddha Bhumi called Buddha Bhumis? The first bhumi is called the Extremely Joyful Bhumi because of the joy of attaining a mind that is of great significance, unfamiliar, and transcendent, and because of the vastness of extreme joy. The second bhumi is called the Immaculate Bhumi because of being free from all the stains of subtle downfalls and immoral discipline. The third bhumi is called the Illuminating Bhumi because that samadhi and the retention of what is heard are the abode of immeasurable appearances of knowledge. The fourth bhumi is called the Radiating Bhumi because the practice of dharma that accords with the aspects of enlightenment burns the tree of afflictions, and the light of the fire of wisdom radiates. The fifth bhumi is called the Very Difficult to Train Bhumi because it is difficult to master the practice of those very dharmas that accord with the aspects of enlightenment through skillful means. The sixth bhumi is called the Manifest Bhumi because the engagement of conditioned phenomena is manifest, and the contemplation of signlessness is greatly manifest. The seventh bhumi is called the Far-Reaching Bhumi because the contemplation of signlessness is uninterrupted and continuous, and it is connected with the pure bhumis. The eighth bhumi is called the Immovable Bhumi because of the spontaneous accomplishment of signlessness and because it is not moved by the arising of afflictions related to signs. The ninth bhumi is called the Good Intelligence Bhumi because of attaining unobstructed and extremely vast intelligence in the power of teaching the Dharma in all ways. The tenth bhumi is called the Cloud of Dharma Bhumi because the body of bad migrations is like the sky, and it is pervaded and covered by a great cloud-like mass of Dharma.

The eleventh ground is called the Buddha ground because of having abandoned the extremely subtle obscurations of afflictions and knowledge, and having manifestly and completely awakened to all aspects of knowledge without attachment or obstruction. Blessed One, how many are the pervasive obscurations on those grounds? How many are the unfavorable situations and discordant aspects? The Blessed One said: Avalokiteśvara, there are twenty-two pervasive obscurations and eleven unfavorable situations and discordant aspects. On the first ground, there is pervasive obscuration of manifest attachment to persons and phenomena, pervasive affliction by the afflictions of the lower realms, and its unfavorable situation and discordant aspect. On the second ground, there is pervasive obscuration of subtle errors of transgression, pervasive obscuration of various kinds of karmic maturation, and its unfavorable situation and discordant aspect. On the third ground, there is pervasive obscuration of desire for sensual pleasures, pervasive obscuration of the complete perfection of hearing and retention, and its unfavorable situation and discordant aspect. On the fourth ground, there is pervasive obscuration of craving for meditative absorption, pervasive obscuration of craving for the Dharma, and its unfavorable situation and discordant aspect. On the fifth ground, there is pervasive obscuration of not being inclined at all towards samsara and of attending to being manifestly inclined towards it, pervasive obscuration of not being inclined at all towards nirvana and of attending to being manifestly inclined towards it, and its unfavorable situation and discordant aspect. On the sixth ground, there is pervasive obscuration of the very act of making the activity of formations manifest, pervasive obscuration of the pervasive arising of many signs, and its unfavorable situation and discordant aspect. On the seventh ground, there is pervasive obscuration of the pervasive arising of subtle signs, pervasive obscuration of means by attending to the absence of signs alone, and its unfavorable situation and discordant aspect. On the eighth ground, there is pervasive obscuration of effort towards the absence of signs, pervasive obscuration of not being in control of signs, and its unfavorable situation and discordant aspect. On the ninth ground, there is the power of retention over the immeasurable teaching of the Dharma, the immeasurable words and letters of the Dharma, and the wisdom and fearlessness that are higher and higher
