Having arrived there, he saw a child with a handsome appearance, beautiful, and pleasing, who had put the finger of his right hand in his mouth and was sucking on it, looking at all the people with unblinking eyes. Having seen this, the venerable Ānanda went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he reported to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, in that empty house there is an abandoned child, handsome in appearance, beautiful, pleasing, like a jewel, looking at all the people with unblinking eyes." Then, the Blessed One said: "Alas, this child is the perfect result of previous practice, he is able to understand the meaning of what I have said, and he is a fortunate one." Thinking this, out of compassion for that child, and in order to lead all people to virtue, the Blessed One went to that empty house. Then, the Blessed One went there and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the Blessed One spoke to that child in verse: "In this terrible charnel ground where snakes and yakshas roam, how is it that you, a child, are not afraid? You are now alone here." Then, that child, by the power of the Buddha and the root of his own previous virtue, again spoke to the Blessed One in verse: "For those assemblies that have no self, who can frighten the Lord of the Able One? Omniscient One, supreme speaker, how is it that you are here? What is the matter? I do not belong to anyone, nor does anything belong to me, I have not seen who is mine, nor have I seen who belongs to me." The Blessed One said: "The result of evil deeds done in the past is like this, being abandoned in this empty house, experiencing suffering." The child said: "Gautama, do you still think this is an empty house? Having sat under the Bodhi tree, have you not fully understood all phenomena?" The Blessed One said: "I fully understand all phenomena, but I do not have the concept of phenomena. I have come to this empty house out of compassion for you." The child said: "When sentient beings are completely unattainable at any time, from where does compassion arise at that time? To whom do you show compassion?" The Blessed One said:

Said: Selflessness, peace, is emptiness. These sentient beings do not know this. Therefore, out of love and compassion for them, practicing merit is practice. The boy asked: Having understood emptiness and peace, even though you know peace and emptiness, Tathagata, haven't you still not abandoned perversion? The Blessed One said: Having realized peace and emptiness, in order to ripen sentient beings, this act of the guide teaching the Dharma is the compassion of all the Buddhas. The boy asked: Tathagata, even now, you have not abandoned perversion. If there is no thought of sentient beings, where will compassion arise? The Blessed One said: Having well grasped the mind of enlightenment, even for non-existent sentient beings, the best of men wear armor, it is the blessing of the self-born. The boy asked: Since nothing is perceived anywhere, all armor is false. For dharmas without things, there is no armor to be perceived. The Blessed One said: Although dharmas have no things, this teaching of the Dharma to living beings is the play of compassion by the protectors of the world. The boy asked: If the Dharma has no letters, where is the speech? Are you deceiving the world? Is it Dharma that is not Dharma? The Blessed One said: I am not a deceiver of the world, nor do I speak of what is not Dharma. What I do is to eliminate the afflictions of perverse sentient beings. The boy asked: Afflictions have no root, neither inside nor outside. They have no place. How can afflictions be purified? The Blessed One said: Things that arise from perversion arise from discrimination. In order to abandon all discrimination, the Dharma is taught to living beings. The boy asked: Why do you need so much discrimination? The mind is naturally clear and luminous, and afflictions do not arise in it. Space does not become an affliction. The Blessed One said: As you said, the mind is always clear and luminous, but due to sudden afflictions, ordinary people become afflicted.
