Having completely transcended sins, being free from desire, the world is at ease. Whoever subdues arrogance and pride, that is the supreme bliss. Monks, the Tathagata, seeing the world burning and blazing with birth, aging, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and strife, at that time, the Blessed One uttered this verse: With sound, touch, taste, form, and smell, this world is universally tormented. Though fearing existence, yet with the desire for existence, one turns back and seeks desire. On the seventh seventh day, the Tathagata was dwelling near the Shaka tree. At that time, two merchants from the north, Gagon and Zangpo, who were wise and intelligent brothers, having obtained great wealth, carrying various kinds of goods, together with many travelers and five hundred fully loaded carts, were going from the south to the north. They had two bulls named Changshe Legkye and Drakpa. They had no fear of obstruction, and where other bulls could not pass, they would send these two. Wherever there was danger ahead, they would stay there as if tied to a post. They would not whip them, but would drive them with a handful of Udala flowers or a garland of nose flowers. Near the Shaka tree, a goddess dwelling in the milky tree forest blessed them with her blessings, so that all their carts could not move, and all the parts of the carts, including the flails, were broken. The wheels of the carts also sank into the ground up to the axle center. Although everyone tried their best to pull, the carts still could not move. Some were amazed and frightened, thinking: What is the reason that these carts are obstructed even on flat ground? What is the change in this? So they had the two bulls, Legkye and Drakpa, pull, and drove them with a handful of Udala flowers and a garland of nose flowers, but they could not move forward. They thought: Why are these two also

Thinking that some dangers might arise from going through uninhabited places, they sent scouts ahead. The scouts returned and said that there was no danger. That goddess also showed her form and reassured them not to be afraid. Those two cowherds pulled the chariot aside to where the Tathagata was. They saw the Tathagata blazing like fire, adorned with the thirty-two marks of a great man, shining with glory like the sun rising not long after dawn. Having seen it, they were amazed and thought: 'Is this Brahma who has come here? Or is it Indra, the lord of the gods? Or is it Vaishravana? Or is it the sun and moon? Or is it some mountain god? Or is it some wind god?' Then the Tathagata showed the saffron robes. Then they said, 'This one who wears saffron robes must be a renunciate, so we have no fear.' They gained faith and again said to each other, 'This renunciate is eating at the right time, what do we have to offer?' Someone said, 'There is honey, yogurt, and sugarcane juice.' They took the honey, yogurt, and sugarcane juice, and went to where the Tathagata was, bowed their heads at the feet of the Tathagata, circumambulated three times, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, they said to the Tathagata, 'Bhagavan, please have compassion on us and accept this offering.' Monks, then the Tathagata thought, 'If I take this with my hand, it is not good. What kind of vessel did the Buddhas of the past, the perfectly enlightened ones, use to receive offerings?' Then his wisdom began to operate. Monks, in this way, the Tathagata, knowing that the time for eating had come, at that very moment, the four great kings from the four directions, each holding four golden bowls, arrived and said to the Tathagata, 'Bhagavan, please have compassion on us and accept these four golden bowls.'

Year. Considering those not belonging to ascetic practices, the Tathagata did not accept them. Similarly, holding four silver bowls, four of beryl, four of crystal, four of tridacna, four made of stone essence, and four bowls made of all precious jewels, even if offered to the Tathagata, considering them not belonging to ascetic practices, the Tathagata did not accept them. Monks, then the Tathagata thought again: What kind of bowls did the previous Tathagatas accept? Thinking thus, he knew that they accepted stone bowls. After the Tathagata generated such a thought, then the Great King Vaishravana spoke to the other three Great Kings, saying: Friends, the sons of the blue lotus lineage gave me four stone bowls, and I thought, I should use these. Then the son of the blue lotus lineage, named Illuminator, said to me: Hey, these vessels should not be used, but exchange them for stupas that will become famous. A Victor named Shakyamuni will appear, offer these bowls to him. Friends, the time and occasion to offer the vessels to Shakyamuni has arrived. Utter songs and the sound of cymbals, and after making offerings, offer the bowls. That vessel is of the nature of Dharma, indestructible, this vessel is of the nature of stone, acceptable. It is not something others can take, now let us go to take those. Then the four Great Kings, together with their relatives and retinue, holding flowers, incense, perfume, garlands, unguents, cymbals, drums, and singing songs, each holding those bowls in their hands, went to where the Tathagata was, and having arrived, made offerings to the Tathagata, filled those bowls with divine flowers, and offered them to the Tathagata. Monks, then the Tathagata thought: These four faithful Great Kings have offered me four stone bowls, but it is not appropriate for me to have four, if I
