Chapter Twenty-Four: Gagon and the Good Chapter. Chapter Twenty-Four: Gagon and the Good Chapter. Monks, thus the Tathagata who has manifestly attained complete enlightenment, praised by the gods, did not break his cross-legged posture. Without blinking, he gazed at the king of trees, experiencing the bliss of meditation and the joy of food, and spent seven days under the Bodhi tree. After seven days had passed, the sons of the gods who dwell in desire, holding a million vases of scented water, arrived where the Tathagata was. The sons of the gods who dwell in form also arrived, holding a million vases of scented water, and washed the Bodhi tree and the Tathagata with scented water. Gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, countless beings, rubbed the scented water that touched the Tathagata's body on their own bodies. They also generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Although those sons of the gods and others returned to their respective abodes, they did not separate from the scented water and did not generate desire for other scents. They did not turn back from unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment because of the joy and supreme joy born from reverently remembering the Tathagata. Monks, then the son of the gods named Kunnapushpa, having gathered in that assembly, touched the two feet of the Tathagata, joined his palms, and asked the Tathagata: "Blessed One, with what samadhi does the Tathagata remain in the cross-legged posture for seven days? What is the name of that samadhi?" Monks, after he had asked this, the Tathagata said to that son of the gods: "Son of the gods, the name of this samadhi is the arrangement of joyful food. Because he possesses this samadhi, the Tathagata remained in the cross-legged posture for seven days. Monks, then the son of the gods, Kunnapushpa, praised the Tathagata with these verses. Feet!

He is the all-encompassing Chakravartin, With lotus petals free from dust, possessing a thousand rays of light, The diadem of the gods touches his feet, I prostrate to the feet of abundant glory. Having prostrated to the feet of the Sugata, At that time, the son of the gods was delighted, Pacifying the Asuras, He spoke these words that dispel doubt: Rejoicing the Shakya lineage, Utterly eliminating attachment, hatred, and ignorance, Also utterly eliminating what has been asked, I beseech you to dispel the doubts of gods and humans. Immeasurable, all-knowing one, For what reason does the Buddha possess the ten powers? At the heart of the Victorious One's Bodhi tree, For seven days, he did not break his lotus posture. Possessing eyes like a hundred petals blooming, What did he see for seven days? Lion of men, with pure eyes, He gazed without blinking. By what means did he remain for seven days In an unbroken lotus posture at the foot of the King of Trees? Is this your aspiration, Or the action of all the lions of speech? His teeth are even and perfectly pure, The face of the Ten Powers is exceedingly fragrant. Please bestow your unerring and excellent speech, And make the gods and humans rejoice. The moon-like face spoke these words, "I will speak, son of the gods, listen. I will speak a little of the answer to that which you asked. For example, wherever a king is, Where the assembly of relatives bestows empowerment, For seven days in that place, He does not leave, it is the nature of a king. Likewise, the one who possesses the ten powers, When the aspiration is fulfilled and empowerment is bestowed, For seven days at the heart of the earth, The Victorious One does not break his lotus posture. For example, just as a hero defeats all the hosts of enemies, Likewise, the Buddha at the Bodhi tree, Having vanquished the afflictions, he gazes. Desire and anger arise from ignorance, These are like enemies to beings, Thieves dressed as virtuous, All of them I have here destroyed. Here, I have utterly destroyed the nine types of pride, And the conceited mind that has no basis. I have utterly abandoned all defilements, And my supreme wisdom has arisen. Here, I have burned with the fire of clear wisdom The cause of existence, craving, And the actions of ignorance, which should not be done, Along with the roots and networks of habitual tendencies. Here, I have severed with the weapon of wisdom The tight knot of obscuration, The long-standing roots of attachment to self and mine, Which cause suffering and long wandering. Here, I have destroyed the deceptive and ultimate end Of that which I have long possessed, The aggregates together with grasping."
