It is called this. The lineage is called this. The color is like this. The food is something like this that is eaten. The lifespan is about this long. The duration is about this long. Happiness and suffering are experienced like this. I, having died from there, was reborn in a place called so-and-so. Having died from there, I was also reborn in a place called so-and-so. Having died from there, I was born here, in this manner, together with the place and direction, I remember many past abodes of myself and all sentient beings. Then, the Bodhisattva, having entered into such a samadhi, with a mind that is completely pure, completely cleansed, radiant, without afflictions, free from near afflictions, pliable, abiding in a workable state, having become unmoving, in the lower part of the night, at the time when dawn is breaking, at about the time of the drumbeat, in order to manifest the wisdom of knowing and seeing the cessation of suffering and the origin of suffering, and the exhaustion of defilements, he focuses his mind and directs it. He thinks to himself: Alas, this world is like this, afflicted by birth, old age, sickness, death, dying and being reborn. However, one does not know how to emerge from this great mass of suffering. Alas, how wonderful it would be if one could know how to completely cease all these great masses of suffering such as old age, sickness, and death! Then, the Bodhisattva thinks to himself: What exists that causes old age and death to occur? What is the cause of old age and death? He thinks to himself: Because there is birth, old age and death occur. The cause of old age and death is birth. Then, the Bodhisattva again thinks to himself: What exists that causes birth to occur? What is the cause of birth? He thinks to himself: Because there is becoming (srid pa), birth occurs. The cause of birth is becoming. Then, the Bodhisattva again thinks to himself: What exists that causes becoming to occur? What is the cause of becoming? He thinks to himself: Because there is grasping (len pa), becoming occurs.

Grasping is thought to be the condition for grasping. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: What exists that causes grasping? What is the cause of grasping? He thought to himself: Because there is craving, there is grasping; the cause of grasping is craving. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: What exists that causes craving? What is the cause of craving? He thought to himself: Because there is feeling, there is craving; the cause of craving is feeling. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: What exists that causes feeling? What is the cause of feeling? He thought to himself: Because there is contact, there is feeling; the cause of feeling is contact. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: What exists that causes contact? What is the cause of contact? He thought to himself: Because there are six sense bases, there is contact; the cause of contact is the six sense bases. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: What exists that causes the six sense bases? What is the cause of the six sense bases? He thought to himself: Because there are name and form, there are the six sense bases; the cause of the six sense bases is name and form. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: What exists that causes name and form? What is the cause of name and form? He thought to himself: Because there is consciousness, there are name and form; the cause of name and form is consciousness. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: What exists that causes consciousness? What is the cause of consciousness? He thought to himself: Because there is formation, there is consciousness; the cause of consciousness is formation. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: What exists that causes formation? What is the cause of formation? He thought to himself: Because there is ignorance, there is formation; the cause of formation is ignorance. Thus, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: Ignorance

Due to that, formations arise. Due to formations, consciousness arises. Due to consciousness, name and form arise. Due to name and form, the six sense sources arise. Due to the six sense sources, contact arises. Due to contact, feeling arises. Due to feeling, craving arises. Due to craving, grasping arises. Due to grasping, becoming arises. Due to becoming, birth arises. Due to birth, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation arise. Thus, this entire great mass of suffering arises, so he thought. Monks, by properly attending to and repeatedly practicing these previously unheard-of teachings, the Bodhisattva's wisdom arose, the eye arose, understanding arose, great knowledge arose, gentleness arose, and wisdom arose. Light appeared. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: What being absent, will old age and death not occur? What ceasing, will old age and death cease? He thought to himself: If birth is absent, old age and death will not occur; if birth ceases, old age and death will cease, so he thought. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: What being absent, will birth not occur? What ceasing, will birth cease? He thought to himself: If becoming is absent, birth will not occur; if becoming ceases, birth will cease, so he thought. Then, the Bodhisattva thought to himself: What being absent, from "what" onwards, extending widely, will formations not occur? What ceasing, will formations cease? He thought to himself: If ignorance is absent, formations will not occur; if ignorance ceases, formations will cease. When formations cease, consciousness ceases, from "consciousness" onwards, until birth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation will all cease. Thus, this entire great mass of suffering will cease, so he thought, until the end. Monks, in this way, by properly attending to and repeatedly practicing these previously unheard-of teachings, the Bodhisattva's wisdom arose, the eye arose, understanding arose.
