Chapter Twenty-two: The Chapter on Perfect Enlightenment Chapter Twenty-two: The Chapter on Perfect Enlightenment Monks, thus the Bodhisattva, having subdued the army of Mara, having crushed the enemy, having completely triumphed on the battlefield, having erected umbrellas, victory banners, and flags, secluded from desires, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, possessing both investigation and analysis, having perfected and abiding in the first dhyana, which is born of seclusion and accompanied by joy and pleasure. He, having abandoned investigation and analysis, with inner purity, with singleness of mind, without investigation, without analysis, having perfected and abiding in the second dhyana, which is born of concentration and accompanied by joy and pleasure. He, having detached from the desire for joy, abiding in equanimity, being mindful and fully aware, experiencing pleasure with the body, the noble ones declare that he who abides in pleasure with mindfulness is in equanimity, having perfected and abiding in the third dhyana, which is without joy. He, having abandoned pleasure, and having previously abandoned suffering, and with the cessation of both pleasure and displeasure of the mind, being neither pleasure nor suffering, having perfected and abiding in the fourth dhyana, which is pure in equanimity and mindfulness. Then, the Bodhisattva, with such a mind that is purified, cleansed, luminous, without defilements, free from secondary defilements, pliable, capable of being used, and unshakeable, in the first part of the night, directs and focuses his mind in order to manifest the knowledge of seeing with the divine eye. Then, the Bodhisattva, with a divine eye that is completely pure and far surpassing that of humans, sees beings passing away and being born, their colors good and bad, virtuous and unvirtuous. He also thoroughly understands that beings go according to their deeds, Alas, these beings are endowed with misconduct of body, endowed with misconduct of speech and mind, reviling the noble ones, holding wrong views, and because of the deeds of wrong views they have fully undertaken, after the destruction of their bodies and the end of their lives, they fall into the lower realms.

Those who have fallen into evil destinies, the fallen beings, will be born in the hells. These beings are those who are endowed with good conduct of body, good conduct of speech and mind, do not slander the noble ones, and possess right view. They, through the karma of right view, through the cause of correctly upholding it, after the destruction of the body, will be born in the good realms, in the world of heavens, among the gods, this should be well understood. Thus, with the pure divine eye, far surpassing human power, one sees the death and transmigration of beings, as well as beautiful appearances and ugly appearances, those who have gone to good destinies and those who have gone to evil destinies, the bad and the good, and all those who go according to their karma. Monks, thus the Bodhisattva in the first part of the night realizes knowledge, dispels darkness, and generates light. Then, the Bodhisattva, having entered into such a state of equanimity, with a mind completely pure, completely cleansed, radiant, without defilements, free from near defilements, pliable, dwelling in a workable state, having become unmoving, in the middle of the night, in order to manifest the knowledge of seeing the wisdom of remembering past lives, he applies his mind and directs it. He remembers many kinds of past lives of himself and other beings, such as: one birth, two births, three births, four births, five births, ten births, twenty births, thirty births, forty births, fifty births, one hundred births, one thousand births, one hundred thousand births, numerous hundreds of thousands of births, one crore births, one hundred crore births, one thousand crore births, one hundred thousand crore births, one trillion crore births, numerous hundreds of crore births, numerous thousands of crore births, numerous hundreds of thousands of crore births, numerous trillions of crore births.
