How do the forms of the earth manifest and become accomplished? And how do the conditions exist? The Blessed One said: Great Physician, for example, the element of wind is formless and invisible, but through the power of conditions, it causes the realms of the world, such as the abodes of the gods, mountains, and forests, to be accomplished. Similarly, this consciousness also causes forms to be accomplished through the power of conditions. Great Physician, furthermore, when two dry pieces of wood meet and are drilled and rubbed against each other, fire is produced. That fire is not visible inside the wood, and without wood, fire will not arise. That fire is also produced from the wood through the power of conditions, but without conditions, it will not arise. In terms of form, fire is not visible inside the wood, and without wood, fire cannot be seen. Great Physician, similarly, consciousness enters through the power of parents. Consciousness is not visible inside the body, and without a body, consciousness will not arise. Great Physician, for example, before fire arises, shape, warmth, and color do not appear clearly. Great Physician, similarly, before the body is accomplished, consciousness, feeling, perception, and volition do not appear. Great Physician, for example, the great orb of the sun appears clearly and shines with glory, but young children do not see the sun's form as black, yellow, white, or reddish-yellow. Great Physician, similarly, consciousness is understood through the aspects of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching, but people do not see consciousness as black, white, or appearing as a form in the body. For example, the sun appears through the signs of heat, hail, movement, and reappearance. Similarly, consciousness should also be observed through signs. After speaking thus, the Great Physician said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, how should I observe the signs of consciousness? The Blessed One said: The signs of volition, the signs of feeling, the signs of perception, thought, sorrow, distress, and displeasure are to be seen as the signs of consciousness.

Oh! Furthermore, the habits of consciousness should be observed from the mind that approaches virtue and the mind that approaches non-virtue. After saying this, the Great Physician said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, how does consciousness arise from the body and quickly take rebirth? How does consciousness, having arisen from the body and not yet born or taken hold of, abide in another body? How should this consciousness be observed? The Blessed One replied: Great Physician, for example, a person with long arms, stretching downwards, wearing battle armor. Riding a horse as swift as the wind, like a divine horse, goes to battle. Having gone to that battlefield, he is pierced in the heart by spears, swords, and arrows. On the battlefield, he falls to the ground from that excellent horse. However, there is someone who is well-versed in the skills of the body, who quickly jumps from the ground onto the back of the horse. Just as that person falls from the horse and mounts and leaps, when the horse approaches, the rider leaps on while the horse is moving. Similarly, consciousness should also be observed in this way. Just as a person, fearing and terrified of the enemy's army, rides a horse and flees, so too, this consciousness, having initially died and transmigrated, is completely seized by the gaze of the gods, and seeing gods and goddesses sitting on thrones, very quickly takes rebirth. Great Physician, furthermore, how should the form of consciousness that has not yet been born after the initial death and transmigration be observed? Just as when a person's shadow falls on water, it appears as a form, but it should not be regarded as belonging to that form. Great Physician, for example, when a body with complete limbs falls on water, it does not experience warmth or cold, nor does it experience bodily fatigue, and that body does not have pieces of flesh. That shadow also does not have the taking of elements. The image of a person appearing in water does not produce sounds of suffering or sounds of pleasure. Similarly, consciousness, having initially died and transmigrated, abandons the shell of the body and appears like an image. Great Physician, in this way,
