Do not test. Do not confuse. Do not bewilder. Where is that Lord, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha? Let us go there. Having gone, we shall test him. If we can confuse or bewilder him, then the entire Magadha country will be subdued by me alone. My gains and honors will also become very powerful. Then, the magician Good Friend, urged by the roots of virtue from previous lives, and by the power of the Buddha, arose from the great city of Rajagriha and went to where Vulture Peak Mountain was, and where the Blessed One was. Having gone, the magician Good Friend saw the Tathagata blazing with rays of light exceeding a billion suns, his face more immaculate than a billion moons, his body as wide as the king of banyan trees, the hair between his eyebrows as clear as a flawless jewel, his eyes as radiant as open lotuses and blue utpala flowers, the crown of his head invisible even to Brahma, teaching the Dharma in the midst of his retinue with sixty branches of melodious voice. Having seen his body like that, and having heard the activity of his speech like that, his mind became peaceful, and he thought to himself: Is this Lord one who possesses all knowledge and all vision? Or is he not? We must definitely test him. Then, the magician Good Friend bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One, and with a mind of testing, requested: Tomorrow at noon, please come to my house. He also thought to himself: Does he know my mind? Or does he not know? If he knows, he will not come. If he does not know, he will come. Then, the Blessed One, in order to subdue the magician Good Friend, and also in order to subdue the majority of the people of the great city of Rajagriha, knowingly granted the magician Good Friend's request, along with the Sangha of monks, without saying anything. Then, the magician Good Friend thought to himself: If he knows that I have a mind of arrogance and still accepts my invitation, then he must be all-knowing.

Thinking that he was neither an Arhat nor an all-seeing one, the magician Good Protector then bowed his head at the feet of the Blessed One and departed from the presence of the Blessed One. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to the Blessed One: "The magician Good Protector will disturb the Sangha with his magic tricks." The Blessed One said: "Maudgalyāyana, be at ease! I have practiced for a long time, and the Tathāgata is one who knows the time. Even the world with the gods cannot disturb the Tathāgata. Furthermore, Maudgalyāyana, desire disturbs, hatred disturbs, and delusion disturbs. But these are completely exhausted in the Tathāgata, along with their latent tendencies, and he is completely liberated. He is of the nature of that which is unborn from the beginning. Therefore, even the world with the gods cannot disturb the Tathāgata. Furthermore, Maudgalyāyana, the magic of the magician Good Protector is one-sided and not true magic. The magic of the Tathāgata is true magic. Therefore, he has perfectly awakened to all dharmas as being like magic. Maudgalyāyana, all that can be posited and established in the realm of sentient beings is like the magic of the magician Good Protector. Even if they all possess such magic, they cannot approach even one percent of the Tathāgata's magic, or one thousandth, or one hundred thousandth, or even in number, or in measure, or in counting, or in example. Maudgalyāyana, what do you think? Can the magician Good Protector universally display this three-thousand great thousand world realm adorned with all kinds of ornaments?" He replied: "No, Blessed One." The Blessed One said: "If the Tathāgata wished, he could adorn world realms as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, and universally display all of them on just a part of the tip of a hair. But even that would not fully show the magic of the Tathāgata. Maudgalyāyana,

Son, what kind of wind circles are there in the ten directions? For example, the wind circle called "Completely Scattering," and the wind circle called "Completely Cutting Off," which completely cut off this three-thousand-great-thousand world, and after cutting it off, they also destroy it. The wind circles called "Universally Scattering" and "Completely Scattering" are those that move between the worlds. The wind circle called "Completely Establishing Everywhere" is the one that moves at the peak of existence. The wind circle called "Completely Destroying" destroys even the king of mountains, Mount Meru, so what need is there to mention ordinary mountains? The wind circle called "Burning" arises at the time of the eon of burning, and it is the one that casts those flames up to the world of Brahma. The wind circle called "Completely Accomplishing" is the one that pacifies the fire of the eon of burning. The wind circle called "Extremely Pleasing" is the one that covers this entire three-thousand-great-thousand world with a single net of clouds. The wind circle called "Watering with Water" is the one that causes rain to fall at the time of the eon of burning. The wind circle called "Extremely Drying" is the one that causes the destruction by water to become extremely dry. Mong. Son of Mongali, even if I were to preach the Dharma for an eon or more, starting with the wind circles, the Tathagata's preaching of the Dharma starting with the wind circles would have no end. Son of Mongali, what do you think? Can a skilled illusionist dwell within those wind circles? Answer: No, Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Son of Mongali, now the Tathagata can abide in all those wind circles with the four postures. If the Tathagata wishes, he can place all the wind circles inside a single mustard seed, and enter into it, and that mustard seed will not be destroyed, and all those wind circles can be contained within that mustard seed.
