In that grove where the departed one was supremely born, surrounded by many hundreds of thousands of immeasurable retinues, he taught them this category of the Dharma of dependent arising, as follows: Conditioned by ignorance is action; conditioned by action is consciousness; conditioned by consciousness are name and form; conditioned by name and form are the six sense sources; conditioned by the six sense sources is contact; conditioned by contact is feeling; conditioned by feeling is craving; conditioned by craving is grasping; conditioned by grasping is existence; conditioned by existence is birth; conditioned by birth are aging, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation. Thus, all these dependent arisings are merely a great mass of suffering. Thus, he extensively and distinctly taught. Gelong Thop! In this dependent arising, ignorance does not think of or act upon action, nor does action think of or act upon ignorance. Likewise, birth does not think of or act upon aging and death, nor does aging and death think of or act upon birth. Thus, all phenomena are without inherent nature, without object, therefore without fabrication, without memory, without self or what belongs to self, naturally pure, and mutually unknowing. Ordinary beings, because they have not heard such a Dharma, grasp at form as self, self as possessing forms, and form as belonging to self. Likewise, it is the same with feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. Due to the power of attachment to the grasping of self and what belongs to self, they grasp at impermanence as permanence, grasp at suffering as happiness, grasp at impurity as purity, and grasp at no-self as self, thus generating the four inversions. Because of inverted views, being deluded by ignorance, not properly applying their minds, and becoming attached to following after the mind, they are unable to cut the bonds of craving for existence, and continuously revolve in the wheel of cyclic existence. The wise are the realm of Dharma.

In order to understand its nature very well, regarding self, person, sentient being, and even life, one does not truly see even a trace of existence. Birth, aging, sickness, death, killing, harming, etc., are also not apparent, so it is said. Electric Light, at that time, the butcher was fierce, and from afar, he heard the sound of the Tathagata preaching the Dharma, and he understood it. Immediately, his mind of killing subsided, he abandoned his weapons, came down from the cliff, and went to where the Bhagavan was. He bowed his head to the feet of the Bhagavan, sat in one place, and said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, I now wish to renounce and practice the path in the teachings of the Tathagata." The Bhagavan replied: "Well done, Bhikshu, you have come well!" As soon as he said this, he became a Bhikshu and was fully ordained. Then, the Tathagata, who was supremely born, knew his superior intention with his wisdom, gradually matured him, and extensively and truly taught the practices of the Bodhisattva. Hearing the fierce deeds, he obtained the forbearance of non-arising Dharma, and in the Buddha's teachings, he obtained non-retrogression. Again, that Tathagata spoke the words of the Dharma of dependent origination, and hearing the extremely beautiful sound, great joy arose in his mind, and after death, he was born in the Tushita heaven, and finally met Maitreya and possessed true faith. Electric Light, thus, the behavior of sentient beings is extremely profound, difficult to discern, and difficult to understand. Therefore, Electric Light, any Bodhisattva who wishes to seek the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment should be very skilled in the faculties and behaviors of sentient beings, abide in equanimity and unobstructed mind towards all sentient beings, and always be free from attachment to all dharmas. Abandon all possessions and practice pure morality.

One should abide in patience. One should generate diligence. One should equally hold meditation and samadhi. One should individually examine the essence of all dharmas as they are. If an Elektra-given Bodhisattva perfects these six dharmas, they will quickly awaken to unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. How does one perfect them? It is because one accomplishes them through reliance on the wisdom of omniscience. What is the treasure of Elektra-given Bodhisattvas? It is when a Bodhisattva thoroughly understands all forms as they truly are, and sees that they are unborn from the beginning and naturally pure. Because the Bodhisattva has attained skill in form, they will possess four distinct kinds of perfect knowledge. What are the four? They are distinct perfect knowledge of meaning, distinct perfect knowledge of dharma, distinct perfect knowledge of terms, and distinct perfect knowledge of eloquence. Among these, distinct perfect knowledge of meaning is because there is no obstruction to the meanings of form. What is the meaning of form? It is the ultimate truth. What is the ultimate truth? It is that form has no object of focus. Whoever possesses such wisdom of ultimate truth is called distinct perfect knowledge of meaning. Distinct perfect knowledge of dharma is when one individually examines the dharmas of form as they truly are, and thoroughly understands them as they truly are. This is called distinct perfect knowledge of dharma. Distinct perfect knowledge of terms is when one is skilled in the means of wisdom that is unobstructed by forms, and thus distinguishes them with various different terms. This is called distinct perfect knowledge of terms. Distinct perfect knowledge of eloquence is when one differentiates and teaches the dharmas of form according to the faculties of sentient beings, yet is without affliction or attachment. This is called distinct perfect knowledge of eloquence.
