Father! Filled with many women, a year of good harvest passed peacefully, amounting to sixty-one hundred thousand. After that, later some cities, some were seven yojanas long, some were six, five, four, three, and two yojanas long, and the extent of their fullness was also one yojana, amounting to eighty-four kotis. At that time, in the Jambudvipa, in a great city called Utterly Secluded, there appeared a man named I-sha-na, and his son was named Maha-shum-ta. That householder's son, while dwelling in seclusion, a god came and spoke in verse, saying: You should diligently seek the Dharma, seek it and contemplate it properly, the Tathagata, the King of Qualities, predicts that you will attain Buddhahood. After the god spoke this verse, he disappeared. Then, that householder's son went to his father, prostrated with both knees, and said: I wish to renounce and practice the pure conduct in the teachings of the Bhagavan, the King of the Rays of All Qualities. Then, the householder I-sha-na spoke in verse, saying: In my house are countless jewels, gold and silver are also without limit, everything that is not in Jambudvipa, will be in my house. I sought jewels, also seeking for my son to enjoy, why renounce and delight in begging from the world? Then, the householder's son spoke in verse to his father, saying: I am always fond of the Dharma, seeking it and contemplating it properly, not delighting in experiencing enjoyment, but delighting in guiding the world. Not needing the jewels of the house, I am fond of few desires and contentment, for the sake of extracting the treasure of the Dharma, I am fond of renunciation. The appearance of a Buddha is extremely rare, and the teaching of the Dharma is also extremely rare, now that I have encountered the teachings of the Buddha, why should I turn back? From that time on, the householder's son paid homage to his father's feet, circumambulated him, and came out, speaking these verses: Father has a hundred thousand kotis, and mother has a hundred kotis, but today my mind of renunciation, cannot be turned back by anyone.

I abandon my own life, parents, and all my many relatives. Without abandoning the Buddha's Dharma, I strive to practice the life of a renunciate. At that time, that householder's son, having spoken these verses, became a renunciate. He went to the Dharma-speaking bhikshu who had attained great power, and diligently listened to the Dharma. Thereafter, that one who had attained great power in speaking also extensively and accurately revealed to him the Sutras that had not been heard before. Then, the bhikshuni Mahashumati, having heard the Sutras that had not been heard before, said this to the Dharma-speaking one who had attained great power: 'I have never heard such Sutras before. Who recites such Sutras? Who desires them? Who accurately takes and holds them? Where can they be heard?' The one who had attained great power said: 'Through the cause and condition of the roots of virtue from remembering past lives, and through the power of the blessings of the Tathagata, the King of the Rays of All Qualities, such profound Sutras naturally abide in my mind.' At that time, the bhikshuni Mahamati, having heard those words, generated superior intention, and through the power of wisdom born from recollection, with the power of wisdom and great skillful means, asked questions of the Dharma-speaking one who had attained great power. The one who had attained great power also accurately answered according to the meaning, and said: 'In the past, to the Tathagata, the King of the Rays of All Qualities, a bhikshu asked the Tathagata about this matter, just as you have asked today, and the Tathagata also accurately answered him in the same way. That bhikshu, having heard it, became very joyful.' At that time, the bhikshuni Mahashumati again asked the Dharma-speaking one who had attained great power in the same way, and the one who had attained great power said: 'In the past, to the Tathagata, the King of the Rays of All Qualities, a bhikshu asked about this matter, just as you have asked today, and the Tathagata also answered him in the same way. That bhikshu, having heard it, became very joyful.'
