They cause sentient beings to generate such a mind. Having generated such a mind, they also diligently and earnestly cultivate the powerful perfections of generosity, ethics, patience, diligence, concentration, and wisdom. The Bodhisattva, by means of the perfection of wisdom, perfects the six perfections. What is the perfection of wisdom of a Bodhisattva? How does the cause of the perfection of wisdom generate diligent effort? The Bodhisattva thinks, "What dharma is called 'self'? What dharma is called 'mine'?" Thus he contemplates and measures. As he contemplates and measures, he does not truly see the dharma called 'self,' nor does he truly see the dharma called 'mine.' He thinks, "In this dharma, there is no dharma called 'self,' nor is there a dharma called 'mine.'" Thus he thinks. Because the Bodhisattva is free from clinging to self and what belongs to self, he thoroughly knows the body to be emptiness. Because the body is empty, he thinks that sentient beings are also empty. Why is that? Because he thinks that if the clinging to self and what belongs to self in dharmas is also empty, what need is there to mention sentient beings? Because the Bodhisattva is free from clinging to self and what belongs to self, he realizes that sentient beings are emptiness. Because sentient beings are empty, he also realizes that the skandha of form is emptiness. Because the skandha of form is empty, he also realizes that the skandhas of feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are emptiness. Because the Bodhisattva is thus free from clinging to self and what belongs to self, he also realizes that the body is emptiness. Because the body is empty, he also realizes that sentient beings are emptiness. Because the mind is empty, he also realizes that the skandhas are emptiness. Because the skandhas are empty, thus, the elements of earth, water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness are also realized to be emptiness, and the element of earth is also the element of earth.

The characteristic of earth is empty. Water, fire, wind, space, and the realm of consciousness are also empty of the characteristic of the realm of consciousness, so these realms have neither a doer nor anything to be done. It is thought that whatever dharma has no doer is emptiness. Good man, these Bodhisattvas, because they have abandoned the grasping of self and what belongs to self, therefore realize that the body is emptiness. Because the body is empty, they also realize that sentient beings are empty. Because sentient beings are empty, they also realize that the body is empty. Because the aggregates are empty, they also realize that the realms are empty. Because the realms are empty, they also realize that the sources are empty. Because the sources are empty, they also realize that the characteristics of the sources are also empty, and they realize that the sources have no doer and nothing to be done, thinking that whatever dharma has no doer and nothing to be done is emptiness. Good man, the Bodhisattva thus observes all dharmas as emptiness. Observing all dharmas as emptiness, one does not truly see a place where hatred arises by its own nature towards those dharmas. Good man, these Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas are called great love, the love that knows the body as emptiness, the love that knows sentient beings as emptiness, and the love that knows the aggregates, sources, and realms as emptiness. Whatever Bodhisattva cultivates such love is called cultivating the love of the emptiness of all dharmas. Good man, this is called the Bodhisattva cultivating great love. Thus, the Bodhisattva, with a mind free from grasping self and what belongs to self, generates a great desire for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and generates great compassion for sentient beings. Therefore, in order to make sentient beings understand and not understand the true nature of dharmas, whatever great armor is put on, this is called the Bodhisattva's practice of great compassion, because one thinks, "I will protect," it is called love.

Should be done. It is called compassion because one thinks, "I should save them." If a Bodhisattva possesses such great love, they become the protector, refuge, place, island, and ultimate destination of sentient beings. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should cultivate such great love. This, which is without attachment to sentient beings and without generating anger, is the Bodhisattva's love for empty beings, devoid of hatred. Furthermore, a Bodhisattva who, through the cause of love, the cause of detachment, and the cause of emptiness, enters into the non-arising and non-ceasing of all phenomena, this is the Bodhisattva's cultivation of great love. A Bodhisattva who thus thoroughly understands all phenomena will not be obstructed by demons and their retinues. A Bodhisattva who possesses this first Dharma will cut off the bonds that obscure all qualities. Because the bonds of qualities have been completely severed, they will attain the perfections of equality. Then, at that time, the Blessed One, in order to more clearly explain this meaning, spoke in verse: Bodhisattvas, in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, constantly know selflessness, and cultivate love, viewing emptiness. Self and what belongs to self, these two, are certainly without a true object. Because all phenomena are without an object, therefore, cultivate the mind of love. Not abiding in phenomena, and also not not abiding, this is the path of all Buddhas, called non-abiding in phenomena. Whatever unsurpassed patience is attained, is patience with the true nature of phenomena. Phenomena are without arising and ceasing, thus thoroughly understanding the meaning of reality. Those endowed with great wisdom, if they rely on this Dharma, will always obtain vast dharanis, and will also obtain fearlessness. They will always meet with the Buddhas, and will understand the meaning of all phenomena. Therefore, that Bodhisattva will attain unsurpassed Bodhi. Furthermore, Bodhisattvas
