Having given alms to the Arhats, the perfectly complete Buddhas, by this method and by generating this power, by giving alms for hundreds of thousands of kalpas in the future, the Bodhisattva, with a superior intention and abiding in great compassion, generates the mind of such armor of diligence, thereby accumulating even more merit. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva who has undertaken diligence obtains ten qualities of Dharma. What are the ten? They are: abandoning the conduct of children; completely upholding the conduct of the Buddha; generating the perception of faults in samsara; completely upholding great compassion; not changing from previous vows; having few illnesses; acting according to the teachings of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, who have appeared in the past, will appear in the future, and are appearing in the present; having little attachment, hatred, and delusion; thoroughly understanding the meaning of the words and letters as taught; diligently accomplishing the truth. Shariputra, a Bodhisattva who has undertaken diligence obtains these ten qualities of Dharma. Shariputra, furthermore, the Bodhisattva remembers the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and thinks to himself: "Those Tathagatas are single-minded, constantly abiding in samadhi, and endowed with non-forgetfulness." Thinking thus, he also thinks to himself: "If I am to follow in the footsteps of the Tathagatas, but with a distracted and forgetful mind, how can I attain this state of Buddhahood?" Therefore, he abandons all attachment, all clinging, all acquisition, all reverence, all attachment to villages, cities, and towns, and all craving for friends and family. For the sake of all sentient beings, he thinks: "I will never abandon any sentient being." He delights in dwelling in extremely solitary places, practicing alone like a rhinoceros, and dwelling in those extremely solitary places, he pervades one direction with loving-kindness towards sentient beings. Similarly, extending it, immeasurably between all ten directions,

With a mind of loving-kindness, one pervades all sentient beings with love. Abiding in love, meditation becomes meditation. Furthermore, Shariputra, if a bodhisattva householder were to honor and serve as many Tathagatas as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, along with their assemblies of monks, with all forms of happiness for as many eons as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, it would be less meritorious than a bodhisattva who has gone forth from home, desiring utmost solitude, going to a solitary place, and taking seven steps. This one will generate far more merit. They will attain enlightenment very quickly. Shariputra, these ten are the benefits of a bodhisattva who dwells in solitude and meditates on meditation. What are the ten? They are: having mindfulness; having wisdom; having realization; having faith; quickly attaining fearlessness; accomplishing dharanis; gaining expertise in birth and destruction; not declining from the aggregate of morality; even the gods attend to them; not desiring the wealth of others. Shariputra, these ten are the benefits of a bodhisattva who dwells in solitude and meditates on meditation. Furthermore, Shariputra, the bodhisattva is skilled in the causes that accord with wisdom. He closely examines, thinking, 'From where does wisdom arise?' He thinks, 'Wisdom arises from the place of the discipline of morality. From the arising of wisdom, all white dharmas increase.' Therefore, he trains in wisdom. He studies all worldly crafts, occupations, mantras, medicines, and all difficult and arduous tasks. Having studied, he generates this thought: 'This worldly wisdom is not for renunciation, not for detachment, not for cessation, not for peace, not for higher knowledge, not for complete and perfect enlightenment, not for a renunciate, and not for going beyond suffering. Therefore, I shall study the wisdom that leads to utmost peace, such crafts, such mantras, and such medicines.'
