In another city, there lived a wealthy householder with abundant riches, free from worldly affairs. He possessed a garden, flourishing with flowers and fruits, with springs and streams, and trees, a place highly suitable for secluded retreat. At that time, a Pratyekabuddha, out of compassion for sentient beings, had appeared in the world and resided in solitude. Because no Buddha appeared in the world, this became the sole field of merit. Later, another Buddha traveled to that city of fields, mountains, and rocks, observing everything. While seeking a place to stay, he arrived at that garden. The person guarding the garden saw the noble one and said, 'For the sake of departing in peace or resting, please, noble one, reside here.' He entered the fire element samadhi at midnight. The person guarding the garden saw this and thought, 'This great monk has such excellent conduct.' Then, a maidservant arose and went to that householder, saying, 'Great householder, today rejoice greatly! A noble one has come to the garden and stayed the night with me. His conduct is extraordinary, possessing great miraculous powers, radiating great light, illuminating the entire garden.' The householder, upon hearing this, quickly went to the garden, prostrated at the noble one's feet, and said, 'Noble one, you are a seeker of alms, and I am a seeker of merit. Please be compassionate and reside in this garden. I will always offer you alms.' Seeing his respectful request, the noble one agreed. He resided in the garden, entering into meditation and supreme liberation, experiencing bliss. At another time, he thought, 'This decaying body of mine will wander in samsara. I have attained what I should attain. To never be reborn, I will enter the peaceful realm of nirvana.' To realize this, he manifested in the sky and entered the fire element samadhi.

Having manifested various miracles from the earth, emitting great rays of light, burning upwards, with heat, and flowing downwards into the water, etc., having shown these, he abandoned this body and no longer arose in consciousness, he completely passed into nirvana in the realm of nirvana without remainder. Then, that householder took his bones and burned them with all the fragrant wood, extinguished the fire with milk, collected all the remaining bones, placed them in a new vase, built a stupa, erected umbrellas, victory banners, and flags, and with very pure faith sprinkled thirty abundant portions of fragrant water, and made great prayers that all the auspicious signs might be accomplished. Monks, listen well, if you think that the one who became the householder at that time was someone else, do not look at it that way, for it is this Joyful One himself. By the power of the karma of having made the best offerings, respect, and generating very great faith, now he is experiencing the fruition of manifestly accomplishing thirty excellent and superior signs. Then, many of the retinue again arose in doubt and said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, what karma did the venerable Joyful One do that, if he had not gone forth here and had remained in the household, he would undoubtedly have become a powerful wheel-turning monarch? The Blessed One said: Monks, when the fruit of the karma accumulated by Joyful One in previous lives ripens, he will undoubtedly experience it himself. Etc., also add in detail as before. Monks, in the past, in this very fortunate aeon, when beings lived to be twenty thousand years old, a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha named Light Protector, endowed with thirty signs, appeared in the world, and resided in the Deer Park at the place where the hermits fell in Varanasi. At that time, in that city, there was a king named Kiki, who ruled the world with Dharma, and ruled as king according to Dharma, etc., also translate in detail as before.

There are three kinds (of people): superior, middling, and inferior. When the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, the One to be Protected, the Buddha, having completed the deeds of the Buddha, entered the realm of nirvana without remainder like a fire that has consumed its fuel, the king took the relics of the Thus-Gone One with reverence, and burned them with sandalwood, juniper wood, and divine incense wood, and so forth. Having extinguished the fire with milk, he collected the relics and placed them inside a precious vase. He built a great precious stupa made of four kinds of precious jewels, one yojana in circumference and half a yojana in height. When the time came to install the wheel on it, the king's middle son himself ascended to the top and installed the middle wheel. Monks, at that time, at that time, if you think that the one who became the king's middle son was someone else, do not look at it that way. It was this Ananda. Because he made offerings with reverence in the past, and because of the virtuous deed of installing the middle wheel, he was always a powerful wheel-turning king ruling over one continent for two thousand five hundred lifetimes. If he had not gone forth in this life, he would have become a powerful wheel-turning king ruling over the great Isvara in the same way. Then, many retinues became doubtful and again requested the Blessed One, saying: Venerable One, what did the venerable and long-lived Ananda do in the past that he was praised as the foremost among the hearers in guarding the doors of the senses? The Blessed One said: This is due to the power of past aspirations. Monks, this Ananda in the past, in the teaching of the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One, the Buddha of Light, went forth from home to homelessness, and his preceptor praised the teaching of the Blessed One as the foremost in guarding the doors of the senses. He practiced celibacy for as long as he lived, but he did not attain any realization in that lifetime, so at the time of his death, he said: May I
