Therefore, from the beginning, Bodhisattvas have come practicing the conduct of Bodhisattvas. Shariputra, those Bodhisattvas who desire to manifest the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment should be endowed with patience and a nature of acceptance. They should be patient and accepting of cold, heat, hunger, thirst, wind, sun, mosquitoes, horseflies, the bites of poisonous snakes, and the ways of speech of others who speak ill and utter harsh words. They should be patient and accepting of painful feelings born and arising from the body, unbearable, rough, life-threatening, and death-approaching feelings. Thus, Shariputra, a Bodhisattva who abides in such patience will attain the patience of a Bodhisattva. What is the patience of a Bodhisattva? Absence of malice is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Non-anger is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Non-harming is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Absence of contention is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Absence of harmful actions is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Protecting oneself is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Protecting others is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Protecting the body is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Protecting purity is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Protecting sentient beings is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Proper discrimination is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Nirvana, being free from desire, is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Relying on the ripening of karma is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Complete purification of the body is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Complete purification of purity is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Complete purification of the mind is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. Experiencing the perfections of gods and humans is regarded as the patience of a Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva who perfects the marks and excellent signs of the Tathagata is

Contemplate the patience of a Bodhisattva. Obtaining the Brahma sound proclaimed by the Tathagata is to contemplate the patience of a Bodhisattva. The conduct of a Bodhisattva, and all roots of virtue not being wasted, is to contemplate the patience of a Bodhisattva. Transcending all harm done by others is to contemplate the patience of a Bodhisattva. Subduing all opponents is to contemplate the patience of a Bodhisattva. In short, the complete perfection of the Tathagata's powers, fearlessnesses, unmixed qualities, great compassion, great love, great joy, great equanimity, and all the Buddha's teachings is to contemplate the patience of a Bodhisattva. Furthermore, Shariputra, the patience of a Bodhisattva is like this: knowing it to be like the sound of an echo, even if one acts, one does not return. Knowing the body to be like a reflection, even if struck, one does not strike back. Knowing the mind to be like an illusion, even if angered, one does not become angry in return. Because one's own qualities are complete, one is not angry when not praised. One does not become attached to praise. Because one is tamed and peaceful, one is not happy when one gains. One does not become discouraged when one does not gain. Because one's mind is vast with thorough investigation, one does not marvel at fame. One is not confused by lack of fame. Because one dwells steadfastly without wavering, one is not subdued by disparagement. One does not become arrogant with praise. Because one looks upon sentient beings, one is not overwhelmed by suffering. Because the happiness of conditioned things is impermanent, one does not delight in happiness. Being born in the realm of existence

It is not patience. Furthermore, if one endures by saying, "This is an insult," that is the patience of enumerating dharmas, and it is not the ultimate patience. If one endures by saying, "Does the eye insult the eye?" that is the patience of individually discriminating the sense bases, and it is not the ultimate patience. If one endures by saying, "This is a letter," that is the patience of the sound of an echo, and it is not the ultimate patience. If one endures by saying, "This too is impermanent, and I too am impermanent," that is the patience of engaging in impermanence, and it is not the ultimate patience. If one endures by saying, "This is inverted, and I am not inverted," that is the patience of high and low, and it is not the ultimate patience. If one endures by saying, "I am of a lineage, and this is not of a lineage," that is the patience of not being of a lineage, and it is not the ultimate patience. If one endures by saying, "I abide on the path, and this abides on a bad path," that is the arising of the patience of the two, and it is not the ultimate patience. I endure emptiness, but I do not endure my going to views. I endure signlessness, but I do not endure my conceptualization. I endure wishlessness, but I do not endure my wishing. I endure non-manifestation, but I do not endure my manifestation. I endure the exhaustion of afflictions, but I do not endure my afflictions. I endure virtue, but I do not endure non-virtue. I endure faultlessness, but I do not endure faultiness. I endure the exhaustion of outflows, but I do not endure having outflows. I endure transcendence of the world, but I do not endure being worldly. I endure purification, but I do not endure all afflictions. I endure nirvana, but I do not endure samsara, that is the patience of abandoning with an antidote, and it is not the ultimate patience. What, then, is the ultimate patience? Whoever has understood emptiness, for that emptiness, there is neither the removal of views, nor the imputation of emptiness. Whoever has understood emptiness, for that emptiness, there is neither the removal of conceptualization, nor the imputation of signlessness. Whoever has understood emptiness, for that emptiness, there is neither the removal of wishes, nor the imputation of wishlessness. Whoever has understood emptiness, for that emptiness, there is neither the removal of manifestation, nor the imputation of non-manifestation. Whoever has understood emptiness, for that emptiness, there is neither the removal of afflictions
