I think of abiding in the state of omniscience itself, abiding in the state of an elephant king. After thus inquiring, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: "Ananda, well done, well done! Did the gods tell you this matter? Or the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones? Or did you know it yourself through the wisdom of your own discernment?" After thus speaking, the venerable Ananda asked the Blessed One: "Blessed One, this matter was not told to me by the gods, nor by the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones. Blessed One, I myself, with the wisdom of discernment, think thus: The Tathagata has passed away today, has not come, and the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas who have arisen now, are all remembered. The Tathagata abides today in the state of Buddhahood, abides in the state of the Victorious One, abides in the state of omniscience itself, and I think of abiding in the state of an elephant king." After thus inquiring, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: "Ananda, your thinking is vast, your discernment is good, and your courage is auspicious. Ananda, you are engaged for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, with compassion for the world, for the sake of the meaning, benefit, and happiness of the great multitude of beings, and gods, it is good, good that you think of asking the Tathagata about this matter! Ananda, it is so, it is so. Even if countless, immeasurable Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas were to gather the vision of wisdom, there would be no harm to the vision of wisdom of the Tathagata. Why is that? Ananda, because the vision of wisdom of the Tathagata is unobstructed. Ananda, if the Tathagata wishes, one alms-food could last for one kalpa, or a hundred kalpas, or a thousand kalpas, or a hundred thousand kalpas, or even longer, yet the faculties of the Tathagata would not deteriorate. Why is that? Ananda, thus the Tathagata is in samadhi...

have also reached the other shore of bliss. Ananda, it is very rare for perfectly complete Buddhas to appear in the world, just as it is rare for the flower of the udumbara to appear in the world. Ananda, it is through the power of the Tathagata that the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, the teacher of all sentient beings, the brave one, appears in the world, and that Bodhisattvas, great beings, think to ask the Tathagata about this matter for the benefit of others. Ananda, therefore, listen well and carefully, and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. Ananda replied, "Venerable One, just so." And he listened respectfully to the teachings of the Venerable One. The Venerable One spoke thus: Ananda, in the past, in a time long ago, countless and immeasurable kalpas ago, a time that was vast, limitless, and inconceivable, at that time, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, named Dipamkara, appeared in the world. Ananda, before the Tathagata Dipamkara, even earlier, there appeared a Tathagata named Prabhavati. Before that, even earlier, there appeared a Tathagata named Kirtana. Before that, even earlier, there appeared a Tathagata named Candana Gandha. Ananda, before the Tathagata Candana Gandha, even earlier, there appeared a Tathagata named Sumeru. Similarly, there appeared a Tathagata named Candra Mukha. There was a Tathagata named Vimala Mukha, a Tathagata named Niranjana, a Tathagata named Vimala Prabha, a Tathagata named Naga Vikrama, a Tathagata named Surya Mukha, a Tathagata named Parvata Raja Ghosa, a Tathagata named Sumeru Citra, a Tathagata named Suvarna Prabha, a Tathagata named Tara Prabha, and a Tathagata named Vairurya Bhasa, and
