Thus, one should completely seek the wisdom of the Buddha. One should also strive to be mindful. So, what is mindfulness? It is like this: subduing the senses. That is, when the eye sees various forms, it does not cling to the characteristics or the apparent signs. He savors the taste of various forms, as well as their faults and arising, and knows them as they truly are. Similarly, with the ear hearing sounds, the nose smelling odors, the tongue tasting flavors, the body touching tangibles, and the mind knowing various dharmas, one does not cling to the characteristics or the apparent signs. He savors the taste of various dharmas, as well as their faults and arising, and knows them as they truly are; this is called mindfulness. Furthermore, what is mindfulness? It is subduing one's own mind, protecting the minds of others, eliminating delight in afflictions, following delight in the Dharma, having no conceptualizations of desire, no conceptualizations of harmful intent, no arising of conceptualizations of violence, no increase of unwholesome roots, no increase of hatred and delusion, no increase of bodily misconduct, no increase of verbal misconduct, no increase of mental misconduct, no increase of improper attention, no increase of all sinful and unwholesome dharmas; this is called mindfulness. Friends, thus, a Bodhisattva who strives in mindfulness and proper attention is endowed with faith and mindfulness. Lord of Secrets, one should increase faith, be constantly unflagging, strive for the sake of the Dharma, and desire the Dharma. Lord of Secrets, a person who is endowed with faith has no fear of falling into the lower realms in the next life, because his mind will not go towards misconduct. He will be praised by the noble ones. Lord of Secrets, furthermore, a person who abides in practicing the Dharma is in accordance with the Dharma, and will please those who see the Buddha. He will also abide in the noble path. He will also attain greatness. Lord of Secrets, having attained greatness, this greatness

Then look, in order to obtain the wisdom of the Tathagata, the mind of enlightenment should be perfected. Secret Lord, furthermore, any person who desires to attain happiness should strive for supreme accomplishment and complete nirvana. Secret Lord, observe how this retinue, which has come from past roots of virtue, is adorned. Secret Lord, in order not to completely fall away from the roots of virtue, one should strive diligently in this. Secret Lord, how does one not completely fall away from the roots of virtue? Secret Lord, gods and humans who abide in mindfulness will not completely fall away from the roots of virtue. Therefore, guarding the mind of mindfulness, abandoning places, renouncing attachment to sensual pleasures, relying on the joy of the Dharma, not generating thoughts of sensual pleasure, thoughts of harm, thoughts of injury, and without unwholesome dharmas, without improper attention, without attachment, hatred, and delusion, without the misconduct of body, speech, and mind, and even without all dharmas that are in accordance with the division of falling away, this is called mindfulness. Secret Lord, whoever is endowed with faith and endowed with mindfulness should, with diligence, with what diligence does one make it endowed with mindfulness, and should be endowed with diligence to truly accomplish those convincing dharmas. Secret Lord, whoever is endowed with faith, mindfulness, and diligence should strive in mindfulness and awareness. Mindfulness and awareness will not cause all of his factors of enlightenment to be exhausted. Secret Lord, whoever is endowed with faith, mindfulness, diligence, memory, and awareness should strive in proper attention.

The aspect of liberation is existent; this is called 'existent.' What is 'non-existent'? In conjunction with wrong application, there is no noble liberation for those who are connected with it; this is called 'non-existent.' Furthermore, karma and its maturation are existent. That which is connected with that karma and its maturation is non-existent. Furthermore, conventionally, the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are existent. That which is connected from the eye to the mind is non-existent. Furthermore, for a Bodhisattva who exerts effort, there is enlightenment. For the lazy, there is no enlightenment. The five aggregates arising from perversion are existent. The arising of phenomena without a cause is non-existent. Furthermore, form that is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change is existent. Form that is permanent, stable, constant, of unchanging nature, and truly abiding in suchness is non-existent. Similarly, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness that are impermanent, suffering, and subject to change are existent. Consciousness that is permanent, stable, constant, of unchanging nature, and truly abiding in suchness is non-existent. Furthermore, conditioned by ignorance, there are formations. When there is no ignorance, there are no formations. Conditioned by formations, there is consciousness. When there are no formations, there is no consciousness. Conditioned by consciousness, there are name and form. When there is no consciousness, there are no name and form. Conditioned by name and form, there are the six sense bases.
