Who among us can gain mastery over the object of focus? Even with regard to the unborn object of focus, one does not abandon the object of focus that arises while thinking about it in the mind. Even with regard to the object of focus without manifest fabrication, one engages in the root of virtue, and the object of focus with manifest fabrication is also brought under control. Even with regard to the object of focus without characteristics, one does not despise the object of focus of the mind of enlightenment in contemplation. Even with regard to the object of focus without aspiration, one sees clearly, and one does not despise the object of focus of the three realms. That which arises from wisdom and skillful means gains mastery over all objects of focus, and thus, focusing on the unattractive, the mind abides in the beautiful body of the Thus-Gone One. Focusing on impermanence, the mind abides in not being weary of cyclic existence. Focusing on suffering, the mind abides in causing all sentient beings to rejoice in the bliss of nirvana. Focusing on selflessness, all sentient beings abide in the mind of great compassion. Focusing on desire, the mind abides in truly showing the great medicine of unattractiveness to sentient beings who engage in desire. Focusing on hatred, the mind abides in truly showing the great medicine of great love to sentient beings who engage in hatred. Focusing on delusion, the mind abides in truly showing the great medicine of dependent arising to sentient beings who engage in delusion. Focusing on equanimity, the mind abides in truly showing the great medicine of the perception of impermanence to sentient beings who engage in equanimity. Focusing on being free from desire, the mind abides in taming into hearers. Focusing on being free from hatred, the mind abides in taming into solitary realizers. Focusing on being free from delusion, the mind abides in taming into bodhisattvas. Focusing on form, the mind abides in wanting to obtain the form of the Thus-Gone One. Focusing on sound, the mind abides in wanting to obtain the melodious voice of the Thus-Gone One. Focusing on smell, the mind abides in wanting to obtain the fragrance of the ethics of the Thus-Gone One. Focusing on taste, the mind abides in wanting to obtain the supreme taste of the marks of the great person of the Thus-Gone One. Focusing on tactile sensation, the mind abides in wanting to obtain the soft and youthful hands and feet of the Thus-Gone One.
