The ground was not prepared. The origin of this matter is explained in the Jataka tales of the great Dharma protectors. At the end of the story, the king attained the fruit of non-return. Thus, the father of the Blessed One each dwelt in the three fruits and had a retinue of monks. Again, he went to Rajagriha (present-day Patna, Bihar) and stayed in the cool grove. At that time, the householder Anathapindada, carrying the wealth of five hundred carts, went to Rajagriha to the house of his beloved friend. When he heard that the Buddha, the Blessed One, had come, he opened the door very early with the power of the gods. He approached the Teacher and heard the Dharma, and attained the fruit of stream-entry. On the second day, he offered great generosity to the Buddha and the Sangha. In order to go to Sravasti (present-day northern Uttar Pradesh), he made a vow in front of the Teacher, and on the forty-five yojanas of the road in between, he gave a hundred thousand coins for each yojana and built a temple for each yojana. He bought Jetavana for eighty kotis of gold and started new construction, building a scented chamber for the one with ten powers in the center. There, around the circumambulations, were the residences of eighty great elders. There were also single and double-storied houses, long houses, and residences such as dwelling places. There were also ponds, walking places, night residences, and day residences. He spent eighty kotis of gold to build a satisfying land and a pleasing temple. In order to welcome the one with ten powers, he sent messengers. The Teacher, having heard the message of the messengers, led a large retinue of monks and departed from Rajagriha, arriving in Sravasti in due course. The great patron prepared the great temple, and on the day the Tathagata arrived at Jetavana, all the children were adorned with ornaments. Again, five hundred adorned youths were sent. They, along with their retinue, carried five hundred banners of five colors of clothing burning brightly and went before the one with ten powers. After them were Great Goodness and Lesser Goodness, two young daughters.

Five hundred maids emerged, each holding a vase filled with gold in their hands. Following them was the merchant's wife, adorned with all her ornaments, leading five hundred women, each carrying a large platter filled with gold. After everyone had left, the merchant himself put on fine clothes. Similarly, five hundred merchants dressed in fine clothes went to the Blessed One. The Blessed One's retinue consisted of these lay devotees, and the great Sangha of monks was his entourage. The light of his own body was like a sphere of golden essence, illuminating the forest, manifesting the boundless play of the Buddhas, the Buddha's glory unparalleled and incomparable, as he entered the Jeta Grove. Then Anathapindika asked: Venerable, how should this monastery be offered? Householder, this monastery should be offered to the Sangha of monks who come and go.
