Those dharmas, called virtuous dharmas, the Tathagata has said that they are of a non-dharmic nature. Therefore, they are called virtuous dharmas. Furthermore, Subhuti, if a son of good family or a daughter of good family were to accumulate and give as charity a mass of the seven precious jewels equal to the number of Mount Sumerus, the king of mountains, in a three-thousand great thousand world system, then compared to that, if someone were to grasp even a four-line verse from this Perfection of Wisdom and teach it to others, Subhuti, this accumulation of merit would not be matched by even one percent of that previous accumulation of merit, not even up to numerical comparison. Subhuti, what do you think? Does the Tathagata think, 'I have liberated all sentient beings'? Subhuti said, 'No, Bhagavan.' Why is that? Subhuti, there are no sentient beings that the Tathagata has liberated. Subhuti, if the Tathagata were to liberate any sentient beings, that would be the Tathagata's clinging to a self, clinging to sentient beings, clinging to life, and clinging to a person. Subhuti, what is called 'clinging to dharmas,' the Tathagata has said is non-clinging, but ordinary people grasp it. Subhuti, what is called 'ordinary people,' the Tathagata has said is not ordinary people; therefore, they are called ordinary people. Subhuti, what do you think? Can the Tathagata be viewed by means of the perfection of signs? Subhuti said, 'No, Bhagavan. The Tathagata cannot be viewed by means of the perfection of signs.' The Bhagavan said, 'Subhuti, it is so, it is so. The Tathagata cannot be viewed by means of the perfection of signs. Subhuti, if the Tathagata were to be viewed by means of the perfection of signs, then a wheel-turning monarch would also be a Tathagata. Therefore, the Tathagata should not be viewed by means of the perfection of signs.' Then, the venerable Subhuti said this to the Bhagavan: 'Bhagavan, I understand the meaning of what the Bhagavan has said.'

If so, one should not regard the Tathagata as possessing perfect marks. Then, the Blessed One spoke these verses at that time: Those who see me in form, those who know me by sound, have entered onto the wrong path; those people will not see me. Buddhas should be viewed as the nature of reality; leaders should be viewed as the body of Dharma. Since the nature of reality is not to be known, it cannot be fully understood. Subhuti, what do you think? If one thinks that the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, is apprehended by the perfection of marks, Subhuti, you should not view it that way. Subhuti, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, does not awaken to the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment by the perfection of marks. Subhuti, what do you think? Do those who have truly entered the Bodhisattva vehicle think that some Dharma is destroyed or cut off? Subhuti, you should not view it that way. Those who have truly entered the Bodhisattva vehicle do not destroy or cut off any Dharma. Furthermore, Subhuti, if a son or daughter of good family fills realms as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River with the seven precious jewels and gives them as charity, it is better than a Bodhisattva who obtains forbearance in the non-self and non-arising of all Dharmas, for that one generates a much greater accumulation of merit from that basis. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva should not completely grasp the accumulation of merit. The venerable Subhuti asked: Blessed One, should a Bodhisattva not completely grasp the accumulation of merit? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, it should be grasped, but it should not be grasped wrongly; therefore, it is called complete grasping. Subhuti, if someone says, "Does the Tathagata go? Does he come? Does he arise? Does he dwell? Does he sleep?" If they say that, then they do not understand the meaning of what I have said. Why is that? Subhuti, the so-called Tathagata has not gone anywhere, nor has he come from anywhere; therefore, he is called the Tathagata, the Arhat.
