Possessing what kind of heroic qualities of patience and virtue? Who, filling the three thousand worlds with jewels, knows the world? The accumulation of generosity, which is superior to Buddhas, Arhats, and Pratyekabuddhas, cannot match the rain of merit upon him. The body abiding in patience becomes completely pure, with thirty-two marks and boundless power and strength. He proclaims the most excellent emptiness to sentient beings. This is the one who possesses patience, the skillful one whom beings rejoice in. If a sentient being takes a piece of sandalwood from another, and with great reverence applies it to the body of a Bodhisattva, while another throws a firebrand at his head, towards both of these, he should generate an equal and balanced mind. The wise Bodhisattva, having practiced patience in this way, generates the mind of enlightenment, and completely dedicates it to supreme enlightenment. The hero, through patience in all the worlds, surpasses Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, and countless realms of sentient beings. While practicing patience, one should also generate the mind in this way: The sufferings of hells, animals, and the realm of Yama are many. If, due to the cause of desire, one helplessly experiences harm, then for the sake of enlightenment, why not endure now? Whips, sticks, weapons, killing, binding, beating, beheading, cutting off ears, limbs, noses, etc., I shall endure all the sufferings of the world. The Bodhisattva abides in the perfection of patience. Those who desire peace through discipline become noble. Abiding in the realm of the ten powers, discipline is not lost. Following all the actions of discipline, he also dedicates that to enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. If one desires to attain Arhatship, Pratyekabuddhahood, or enlightenment, but discipline is lax, unskilled, and conduct is degenerated, then if one completely dedicates peace and enlightenment to the supreme, even striving for desirable qualities, one abides in the perfection of discipline. Whatever Dharma definitely gives rise to the qualities of enlightenment, this is the meaning of discipline for those who possess virtuous qualities. Whatever Dharma completely diminishes the enlightenment of those who benefit, this is what the guide teaches as lax discipline. If a Bodhisattva enjoys the five desirable qualities, but takes refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and noble Sangha, and thinks of accomplishing Buddhahood while focusing on omniscience, the wise one (i.e., possesses) discipline.
