Bhagavan, please teach! Sugata, please teach! After making such a request, the Bhagavan said to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, what do you think? Do sentient beings engage in clinging to self and clinging to what belongs to self for a long time? Subhuti replied: Bhagavan, it is so! Sugata, it is so! Sentient beings have been engaging in clinging to self and clinging to what belongs to self for a long time. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, what do you think? Are clinging to self and clinging to what belongs to self empty? Subhuti replied: Bhagavan, they are empty. Sugata, they are empty. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, what do you think? Because of clinging to self and clinging to what belongs to self, do sentient beings wander in samsara? Subhuti replied: Bhagavan, it is so! Sugata, it is so! Because of clinging to self and clinging to what belongs to self, sentient beings wander in samsara. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, in that case, it is fully understood that sentient beings are completely defiled by afflictions. Because how sentient beings cling and manifest attachment, they will be completely defiled by afflictions. In this, no sentient being is completely defiled by afflictions. Subhuti, because how there is no clinging and no manifestation of attachment, it is impossible to fully understand clinging to self and clinging to what belongs to self. Subhuti, in that case, it is fully understood that sentient beings are completely purified. Because how sentient beings have no clinging and no manifestation of attachment, they will be completely purified. In this, no sentient being is completely purified. Subhuti, if a great Bodhisattva practices in this way, they are practicing in the Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, in this way, it is fully understood that all phenomena are peaceful and all phenomena are empty, and that sentient beings are completely defiled by afflictions and completely purified. Subhuti replied: Bhagavan, in this way, it is fully understood that all phenomena are peaceful and all phenomena are empty, and that sentient beings are completely defiled by afflictions and completely purified, this is truly wonderful! Bhagavan, if a great Bodhisattva practices in this way, they are practicing in the Perfection of Wisdom.

acting in it. World Honored One, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva acts in this way, he does not act in form, not in feeling, not in perception, not in formations, not in consciousness. World Honored One, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva acts in this way, he will not be overwhelmed by the world with its gods, humans, and asuras. World Honored One, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva acts in this way, he will subdue the conduct of all those of the Hearer Vehicle and the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, and will also attain the state of not being subdued. Why is that? World Honored One, the very nature of Buddhahood, the very nature of Tathagatahood, the very nature of Self-Arisenness, the very nature of Omniscience, is unsubduable. World Honored One, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who is endowed with the Perfection of Wisdom, if he abides in mindfulness, even if he has passed away, he can still abide, and if he practices constantly day and night, he will draw near to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and will quickly realize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment and become a Buddha. Having thus spoken, the World Honored One said to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva acts in this way, he is acting in the Perfection of Wisdom. If a Bodhisattva Mahasattva acts in this way, he does not act in form. Likewise, not in feeling, not in perception, not in formations, not in consciousness.

If one abides in mindfulness endowed with the Perfection of Wisdom, and passes the days and nights, then one is close to unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, and will quickly manifest unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment and become a Buddha. Furthermore, Subhuti, if all the sentient beings in Jambudvipa were to obtain human bodies one after another, and having obtained human bodies, were to generate the mind for unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, and having generated the mind for unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, were to abide until the end of their lives, and having abided until the end of their lives, were to pay homage, respect, serve, make offerings, draw pictures, and attend to all the Tathagatas until the end of their lives; similarly, were to give charity to all sentient beings, and dedicate that charity to unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment, what do you think, Subhuti? Do those Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas generate much merit from that basis? Subhuti replied: Bhagavan, much, Sugata, much. The Bhagavan said: Subhuti, even more so, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in mindfulness endowed with the Perfection of Wisdom for even just one day, then that son or daughter of good family will generate even more merit. Why is that? Subhuti, in whatever way a Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides day and night in mindfulness endowed with the Perfection of Wisdom, in that way he becomes the object of charity for all sentient beings. Why is that? Subhuti, it is like this: other sentient beings do not have such a mind of loving-kindness as that of that Bodhisattva Mahasattva, except for the Buddha Bhagavan. Why is that? Subhuti, the Tathagata is an incomparable person. Subhuti, the Tathagata is without simile. Subhuti, the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the perfectly and completely awakened Buddhas, are endowed with inconceivable dharmas. Subhuti, if a son of good family
