Because of pride, and because of pride and wrong pride and increased pride, belittling other Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, it will make omniscience distant, and it will also make the wisdom of the Buddha distant. Because it is not completely grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom, and is separated from skillful means, separated from virtuous friends, and completely grasped by evil friends, such a person should expect the Hearer's Ground or the Solitary Buddha's Ground, or to attain accomplishment from any one of these two grounds. If someone cultivates and tames for a long time and a very long time, relying on this Perfection of Wisdom, wanting to manifest the Unsurpassed Perfect Complete Enlightenment, if he relies on virtuous friends, and is always in the presence of virtuous friends, then with a completely accomplished body, he will condemn, purify, harm, abandon, and discriminate those minds of enlightenment, even so, it will be difficult for him to attain the fruit of the Buddha. Why is that? Subhuti, the place of downfall for the pride of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is so heavy. Subhuti, for example, a Bhikshu of the Hearer Vehicle, for the Hearer's Ground, the four root downfalls are heavy, if any other downfall occurs, he is not a Bhikshu, not a Shramana, not a son of Shakya. Even those four downfalls, the mind of pride and contempt is very heavy, for example, from the name of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, a great non-virtuous mind of contempt arises, this mind is heavier than those downfalls, it should be understood in this way. Subhuti, let alone the four root downfalls, Subhuti, even the five inexpiable sins, if someone in the name of a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, generates a mind of pride, this mind is very heavy, this mind is heavier than the downfalls of the five inexpiable sins, it should be understood in this way. Subhuti!

Even such a pointing out of names will cause subtle works of Mara to arise, and those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas should understand. Having understood, they should completely abandon them, and also cause others to comprehend and cause them to abandon them. Furthermore, Subhuti, wicked Maras will come to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas and urge and remind them with the qualities of solitude. Subhuti, how do wicked Maras come to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas and urge and remind them with the qualities of solitude? Subhuti, in this case, wicked Maras come to the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, and having come, they say this: The Tathagata speaks of delighting in solitude, one should dwell in monasteries, forests, mountain caves, cemeteries, and heaps of straw, etc. Subhuti, like this, monasteries, remote places, uninhabited places, forests, mountain caves, cemeteries, and heaps of straw, etc., various dwelling places, I do not say that is the solitude of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Subhuti asked: Blessed One, if other than dwelling in monasteries, remote places, uninhabited places, forests, mountain caves, cemeteries, and heaps of straw, etc., various dwelling places, what other solitude is there for the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva? Blessed One, what other kind of solitude is there for the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva? Having asked thus, the Blessed One said this to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, if the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is separated from the mental activity associated with the Hearers, and separated from the mental activity associated with the Solitary Buddhas, then the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is dwelling in solitude. Even if he dwells in the city, he dwells with the perfection of wisdom, skillful means, and the abiding of love and great compassion for all sentient beings. Dwelling in this way, that dwelling is indeed dwelling in solitude. Furthermore, Subhuti, I say that the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva's mental activity associated with Hearers and Solitary Buddhas
