The thusness of the departed also follows the thusness. The thusness of the Tathagata follows the thusness of the past. The thusness of the past follows the thusness of the Tathagata. The thusness of the Tathagata follows the thusness of the future. The thusness of the future follows the thusness of the Tathagata. The thusness of the Tathagata follows the thusness of the present. The thusness of the present follows the thusness of the Tathagata. The thusness of the Tathagata follows the thusness of the past, future, and present. The thusness of the past, future, and present follows the thusness of the Tathagata. Thus, the thusness of the venerable Subhuti, the thusness of the past, future, and present, and the thusness of the Tathagata are not to be made two. Similarly, the thusness of all dharmas and the thusness of Subhuti are not two, and no one can make them two. O Bhagavan, the thusness that is the Bodhisattva is the very thusness of the Bhagavan who has manifestly awakened to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. By what thusness does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, upon manifestly awakening to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, also obtain the name of Tathagata? This is that thusness. At the time of teaching this thusness of the Tathagata, just as the Tathagata manifestly awakens to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, this great earth shakes in six ways and with eighteen great signs: it quakes, it exceedingly quakes, it universally exceedingly quakes; it trembles, it exceedingly trembles, it universally exceedingly trembles; it sways, it exceedingly sways, it universally exceedingly sways; it stirs, it exceedingly stirs, it universally exceedingly stirs; it flashes, it exceedingly flashes, it universally exceedingly flashes; it roars, it exceedingly roars, it universally

There was a great uproar. Furthermore, the venerable Subhuti said to those gods, "Gods, thus it is that the venerable Subhuti is born after the Tathagata. Furthermore, the venerable Subhuti is not born after form, not after feeling, not after perception, not after formations, not after consciousness. He is not born after the fruit of stream-entry, not after the fruit of once-returner, not after the fruit of non-returner, not after the fruit of Arhat. He is not born after a solitary Buddha, not born after a Buddha. Why is that? Because whatever is born after and whatever dharma is born after, those are not truly existent and are not observed. Thus it is that the venerable Subhuti is born after the Tathagata." Then, the venerable Shariputra said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, thus it is that this suchness is a profound practice." After he said this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Shariputra, "Shariputra, it is so, it is so. Shariputra, thus it is that this suchness is a profound practice." When this teaching of suchness was taught, three hundred monks, without grasping, were liberated in mind from the defilements. Five hundred nuns, regarding the dharmas, their Dharma eyes were purified, without dust and free from defilement. Five gods, who had previously been completely purified, obtained tolerance of the Dharma of non-arising. Sixty Bodhisattvas, without grasping, were liberated in mind from the defilements. Then, the venerable Shariputra, knowing that those Bodhisattvas, without grasping, were liberated in mind from the defilements, said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, what is the cause and what is the condition for these Bodhisattvas to be liberated in mind from the defilements without grasping?" The Blessed One said, "Shariputra, these Bodhisattvas have served and honored five hundred Buddhas and have always given alms in every way."

Having kept the precepts, practiced patience, initiated diligence, practiced meditation, purified these, but these were not completely grasped by the Perfection of Wisdom, and were separated from skillful means. Shariputra, even so, the path of these Bodhisattvas is to practice emptiness or signlessness or wishlessness. Even so, because they do not possess skillful means, they will manifest the real limit and will definitely appear in the position of the Hearers, but not in the position of the Buddha. Shariputra, for example, there is a bird whose body is one hundred yojanas, or two hundred yojanas, or three hundred yojanas, or four hundred yojanas, or five hundred yojanas in size. It lives in the Trayastrimsha heavens, thinking, 'I will go to Jambudvipa.' Shariputra, that bird has not grown wings, or its wings have fallen off, or its wings have been cut off. It thinks, 'I will live in Jambudvipa,' and jumps from the assembly of the Trayastrimsha gods, and that bird falls from there. While staying in the middle of the sky, it thinks, 'Alas, I should return to the Trayastrimsha heavens.' Shariputra, what do you think? Can that bird return to the Trayastrimsha heavens? The Venerable Shariputra replied: 'Bhagavan, no.' The Bhagavan said: 'Shariputra, if it also thinks, "Alas, I should live in Jambudvipa without being hurt or pained." Shariputra, what do you think? Can that bird live in Jambudvipa without being hurt or pained?' Shariputra replied: 'Bhagavan, no.' Bhagavan, it will fall to Jambudvipa and be hurt and pained. It will suffer the pain of death or near death. Why is that? Bhagavan, it is because its body has become huge, and it has no wings, and it has fallen from a high place.' After answering in this way, the Bhagavan said these words to the Venerable Shariputra:
