will enter there. Walking or dwelling there, either in a monastery of wild animals, or a monastery of venomous snakes, or a monastery of thieves, or a monastery of water, or a monastery of famine, wherever it may be, they will go there. Then they will say to those who listen to the Dharma, 'Noble sons, know that I will go to any place where there is fear of creatures, fear of wild animals, fear of meat-eaters, a monastery of venomous snakes, a monastery of thieves, a monastery of water, or a monastery of famine. Noble sons, know that, can you endure these sufferings?' Saying this, they will avoid it by subtle means. Then, they will also become weary. Having become weary, they will not attend to him and will turn back. Subhuti, these obstacles will occur between reciting, chanting, and writing the Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, this also, because the Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not possess the assembly, it should be known as the work of Mara. Furthermore, Subhuti, a Dharma-speaking monk will be devoted to the house of a friend and the house of giving alms. Because he is devoted to the house of a friend and the house of giving alms, he always thinks of approaching the house of a friend and the house of giving alms. Because he always thinks of approaching, due to many affairs, he will abandon those who listen to the Dharma, saying, 'Please wait a moment, I have something to attend to. I have something I need to go and do.' Subhuti, this also, he will not possess the assembly for writing and comprehending the Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, this also, because the Bodhisattva Mahasattva does not possess the assembly, it should be known as the work of Mara. Therefore, Subhuti, the wicked Mara will strive in every way to ensure that no one holds, carries, reads, comprehends, recites, shows, closely shows, memorizes, chants, writes, or causes others to write this Perfection of Wisdom, in those and those ways, he will strive in that and that way.

will become so. Subhuti, therefore, all those who do not have the assembly of obstacles, all those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas should recognize that as the work of Mara, and having recognized it, they should abandon it. Having said that, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, for what reason does the evil Mara try so hard to prevent anyone from holding, grasping, reciting, understanding, diligently reciting, proclaiming, closely proclaiming, transmitting, chanting, writing, or causing others to write this Prajnaparamita? Like that, they try in every way and strive greatly. Having said that, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, the omniscient wisdom of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, is born from the Prajnaparamita. The teachings of the Tathagata are born from omniscient wisdom. The teachings of the Tathagata cause immeasurable, countless, and inconceivable beings to abandon their afflictions. When afflictions are abandoned, the evil Mara cannot find an opportunity. When an opportunity is not found, they will be tormented by suffering, their minds will not be happy, and the thorn of sorrow will pierce their hearts. Therefore, they are very unhappy with writing, understanding, or learning the Prajnaparamita, and they strive diligently, trying in every way to prevent anyone from writing, understanding, or learning this Prajnaparamita. Subhuti, furthermore, the evil Mara will come in the guise of a renunciant to cause discord. Subhuti, for those Bodhisattvas who have newly entered the Great Vehicle, who are small-minded, dull, inferior, foolish, and whose sons of good family have not been predicted to attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, they will cause separation in this way: Venerable ones, what you are listening to is not the Prajnaparamita. How could it be in my Sutra Pitaka...

And this, belonging to the Sutra section, is the Perfection of Wisdom. Thus, Subhuti, the Evil One causes doubt and makes them abandon it. Subhuti, the Evil One also appears in the guise of a mendicant, comes to discriminate, and causes doubt in those newly entering the Bodhisattva Vehicle, those of small wisdom, inferior wisdom, base wisdom, those who have become blind, those who have not been predicted to attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Having become doubtful, they will not hold this Perfection of Wisdom, will not recite it, will not read it, will not understand it, will not proclaim it extensively, will not show it, will not closely show it, will not interpret it, will not chant it, will not write it, will not cause others to write it. Subhuti, this also should be recognized by the Bodhisattva Mahasattva as the work of Mara. Furthermore, Subhuti, the Evil One transforms into a Bhikshu, comes in the guise of a Buddha, and says that any Bodhisattva who practices profound Dharma is manifesting the true extreme, and that they will become a Shravaka, not a Bodhisattva. For example, like this Bodhisattva, this is the near work of Mara. Subhuti, this also should be recognized by the Bodhisattva Mahasattva as the work of Mara. Subhuti, in this way, when writing, understanding, and practicing this Perfection of Wisdom, many different works of the Evil One will arise. These should be recognized by the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, and having recognized them, they should be completely abandoned, not cultivated, otherwise, one should diligently exert oneself, and also possess mindfulness and awareness. Having spoken thus, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, it is so, it is so, Sugata, it is so, it is so. Blessed One, those great jewel-like gems have many enemies. Why is that? Blessed One, it is like this: because they are difficult to obtain and precious, they are treasures, and for this reason, they have many enemies. Likewise, Blessed One, this Perfection of Wisdom is also the same.
