Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, if the Blessed One were to fully describe these qualities of those sons and daughters of good family, how many obstacles would they encounter, Blessed One?" After he had spoken, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, many activities of Mara that cause obstacles will occur." Subhuti asked: "Blessed One, how many kinds of activities of Mara that cause obstacles will occur?" The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, when Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas explain the Prajñāpāramitā, their eloquence will take a long time to arise, Subhuti, this should be recognized as the first activity of Mara. Subhuti, even if eloquence arises, they will become distracted, this should also be recognized as an activity of Mara.

It should be known as the work of Mara. Subhuti, the names of the villages, cities, and towns where I was born are not mentioned here, and my name and lineage are not mentioned here. The names and lineages of my parents are also not mentioned here. The lineage in which I was born is also not mentioned, thinking, 'If those people do not listen to the Prajnaparamita, and think of leaving, then however many those who have generated the mind are, in whatever way they leave, in that way, where they will again engage in yoga, they will be reborn in as many kalpas.' Why is that? Subhuti, the Prajna Paramita, the irreversible Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, will not necessarily arise with aversion to worldly and transworldly dharmas. Subhuti, this should also be known as their work of Mara. Furthermore, Subhuti, those sentient beings who possess the Bodhisattva vehicle, abandoning and discarding the Prajnaparamita, which accomplishes the omniscient wisdom, think of seeking those Sutras that do not accomplish the omniscient wisdom. Subhuti, this should also be known as their work of Mara. Moreover, Subhuti, how is it that they do not want to study worldly and transworldly dharmas, and do not want to necessarily arise with aversion to worldly and transworldly dharmas, therefore they do not study this Prajnaparamita. Because by studying this Prajnaparamita, they will not necessarily arise with aversion to worldly and transworldly dharmas. Thus, those of little wisdom, abandoning and discarding the root of fully knowing worldly and transworldly dharmas as they are—the Prajnaparamita—think of grasping at the branches. Subhuti, for example, someone gives up the prepared dough ball from the beginning, and thinks of seeking crumbs of dough from the workers. Similarly, Subhuti, in the future, some sentient beings who possess the Bodhisattva vehicle will abandon this Prajnaparamita, the root of omniscient wisdom.

Therefore, the Hearer and Solitary Realizer vehicles are like branches, leaves, and petals, and they will think of seeking the essence—Buddhahood itself—from them. Subhuti, this should also be regarded as the work of the maras of those bodhisattvas. Why is that? Because those of little wisdom do not understand that this Perfection of Wisdom accomplishes the omniscient wisdom. They abandon and forsake the Perfection of Wisdom, and instead think that they should especially fully understand other sutras that are taught by Hearers or taught by Solitary Realizers. Subhuti, those bodhisattvas of such a kind should be known to have entered into branches, leaves, and petals. Why is that? Subhuti, a bodhisattva mahasattva should not teach in the way that individuals of the Hearer vehicle and individuals of the Solitary Realizer vehicle are taught. Subhuti, how should individuals of the Hearer vehicle and individuals of the Solitary Realizer vehicle be taught? Subhuti, they think to themselves, 'I shall tame myself alone, I shall pacify myself alone, I shall completely liberate myself alone from suffering.' They strive to accumulate all roots of virtue for the sake of taming, pacifying, and completely liberating only themselves from suffering. Subhuti, a bodhisattva mahasattva should not teach in that way either. Subhuti, however, a bodhisattva mahasattva should, for the sake of benefiting all the world, abide in suchness himself and also establish all sentient beings in suchness, and he should completely liberate immeasurable realms of sentient beings from suffering. He should teach in that way, and a bodhisattva mahasattva should strive to accumulate all roots of virtue in that way, and he should not be conceited about it either. Subhuti, it is like this, for example: A certain person who has not seen an elephant seeks the color and shape of an elephant. He finds an elephant in the darkness and judges it according to the part that he touches. After judging it, he thinks of seeking the footprints of the elephant, and from the footprints of the elephant he seeks the elephant.
