Or the thirty-seven dharmas of the wings of enlightenment, or the fruit of stream-enterer, or the fruit of once-returner, or the fruit of non-returner, or the arhatship itself, or the self-enlightenment, or the unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, there is no attachment to any dharma. Why is that? Like this, he sees all dharmas as empty in their essence, because emptiness does not cling to emptiness. If emptiness has no object, what need is there to mention clinging to emptiness? Subhuti, thus the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides without clinging to all dharmas. Having trained in what training and abiding in what training, he observes the conduct of all sentient beings. When he looks at what these are doing, it is clinging to what is not. Having seen those sentient beings who are engaged in clinging to what is not, he thinks to himself, "These sentient beings are easy to liberate from clinging to what is not." Thinking thus, he abides in the Perfection of Wisdom, and through skillful means, he separates those sentient beings from that clinging to what is not. Having separated them, he also causes them to enter into the six dharmas, saying, "O sentient beings, give alms, and you will not be separated from enjoyments. And do not be arrogant with those enjoyments, for there is no essence in them at all." Likewise, keep the precepts! Practice patience! Likewise, exert effort! Likewise, enter into the meditations! Likewise, cultivate wisdom! Do not be arrogant with those either, for there is no essence in them at all. Likewise, abide in the fruit of stream-enterer! Do not be arrogant with that either. Likewise, abide in the state of arhatship! Do not be arrogant with that either. Likewise, abide in self-enlightenment! Likewise, abide in unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment! Likewise, abide in all the Buddha's dharmas! Do not be arrogant with those either.

And do not be attached. It shows that those have no essence at all. He instructs those sentient beings in this way, shows them accordingly, and practices the path of enlightenment, not being attached to any dharma. Why is that? Because the nature is emptiness, by what would one be attached to them? Where would one be attached to them? The nature of those to which one is attached does not exist, because there is no attachment to all dharmas. Thus, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the path of perfect enlightenment and does not abide in any dharma, that is, abides in a way of non-abiding. He practices the perfection of generosity and does not abide in it either. Similarly, he practices the perfection of morality, the perfection of patience, the perfection of diligence, the perfection of meditation, and the perfection of wisdom, and does not abide in them either. He enters the first dhyana and does not abide in it either. Why is that? Because in this way, meditation is empty in nature, and the one who enters into it is also empty, and those aspects, whatever aspects they are, are also empty. Similarly, it should be applied up to the fourth dhyana as well. Similarly, he also enters into loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, and does not abide in those either. Similarly, he also enters into the four formless absorptions, the eight liberations, and the nine successive absorptions, and does not abide in those either. Similarly, he also attains the fruit of stream-entry and does not abide in it either. He attains up to the state of Arhatship and does not abide in it either. Similarly, he also attains self-enlightenment and does not abide in it either. Why is that? Because of two reasons: those fruits do not exist in their own nature, and one does not consider it sufficient to abide in them. He thinks like this: I should not abide in it by those who have attained the fruit of stream-entry. Similarly, up to the state of a solitary Buddha.

He should not dwell on this thought. What is the reason for this? It is because he thinks like this: 'I will definitely and without doubt awaken to the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment.' He thinks that those dharmas are present here. Thus, from the moment a Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates the first thought, he never generates any thought other than the thought of unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment. From the first ground up to the tenth ground, it is the same; it is solely the thought of unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Subhuti, whatever a Bodhisattva Mahasattva subdues with an undistracted mind, whether through body, speech, or mind, is always in conjunction with the thought of enlightenment. Abiding in that very thought of enlightenment, he does not generate distraction from the path to enlightenment. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: 'Venerable Blessed One, if all dharmas are unborn, then, venerable Blessed One, is enlightenment attained by the arising of the path?' The Blessed One replied: 'Subhuti, it is not so.' He asked: 'Is enlightenment attained by the non-arising of the path?' The Blessed One replied: 'Subhuti, it is not so.' He asked: 'Then, is enlightenment attained by neither the arising nor the non-arising of the path?' The Blessed One replied: 'Subhuti, it is not so.' He asked: 'Venerable Blessed One, then by what is enlightenment attained?' The Blessed One replied: 'Subhuti, enlightenment is attained neither by the path nor by the non-path. What is the reason for this? Subhuti, enlightenment itself is the path, and the path itself is enlightenment.' He asked: 'Venerable Blessed One, if enlightenment itself is the path, and the path itself is enlightenment, then since the Bodhisattva Mahasattva attains that enlightenment itself, why do the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly and Completely Awakened One, repeatedly teach the ten powers and the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha?' When he had spoken thus, the Blessed One
