Buddha! Why is that? The Tathagata turned the wheel of Dharma. Having said this, the venerable Subhuti said to the venerable son of Sharadvati: Venerable son of Sharadvati, I do not wish to be bound to the unborn Dharma. I do not wish to enter the stream in the unborn, nor do I wish to have the fruit of entering the stream. Likewise, I do not wish to have an Arhat in the unborn, nor do I wish to have the fruit of an Arhat. I do not wish to have a Pratyekabuddha in the unborn, nor do I wish to have Pratyekabodhi. Venerable son of Sharadvati, a Bodhisattva does not practice austerities with the thought of hardship. Why is that? Venerable son of Sharadvati, if he generates the thought of hardship, he will not be able to accomplish the benefit of immeasurable and countless beings. Venerable son of Sharadvati, however, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, without focusing on beings, generates the thought of a father, the thought of a mother, the thought of a son, and the thought of self, and generates the mind for unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. For example, the so-called "I, I" is not found or perceived in all of everything, in all kinds of everything. Likewise, one should also generate this thought towards internal and external dharmas. If one generates this thought in this way, then the thought of hardship will not arise. Why is that? In this way, he does not grasp or focus on those dharmas in all of everything, in all kinds of everything. Venerable son of Sharadvati, I do not wish to have a Tathagata in the unborn. I do not wish to have an unsurpassed perfect and complete Buddha. I do not wish the Tathagata to turn the wheel of Dharma. Nor does one obtain any Dharma through the unborn Dharma. Having said this, the venerable son of Sharadvati said to the venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, do you wish to obtain through the unborn Dharma? Or do you wish to obtain some Dharma through the born Dharma? He replied: Venerable

The son of the venerable Sharadvatiputra, I do not wish to attain the unarisen dharma, nor do I wish to attain any dharma through the arisen dharma. He said: Venerable Subhuti, is there nothing attained, and nothing realized? He said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, there is attainment and there is realization, but not by the two. However, venerable Sharadvatiputra, attainment and realization are designated in worldly terms. Similarly, the stream-enterer is also designated in worldly terms. Similarly, up to the Arhats, up to the Pratyekabuddhas, and the unsurpassed perfectly complete Buddha are also designated in worldly terms, but in the ultimate sense, there is neither attainment nor realization, up to the perfectly complete Buddha. He said: Venerable Subhuti, just as attainment and realization are designated in worldly terms, are these five destinies of beings also differentiated by worldly terms, but not in the ultimate sense? He said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, it is just so. Just as attainment and realization are designated in worldly terms, these five destinies of beings are also differentiated in worldly terms, but not in the ultimate sense. Why is that? Venerable Sharadvatiputra, because in the ultimate sense there is no action, no ripening, no affliction, and no purification. After saying this, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said this to the venerable Subhuti: Venerable Subhuti, does the unarisen dharma arise? Or does the arisen itself arise? He said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, I do not wish to arise in the unarisen dharma. He said: Venerable Subhuti, in what unarisen dharma do you not wish to arise? He said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, I do not wish to arise in the unarisen nature of form, which is emptiness. Similarly, I do not wish to arise in the unarisen nature of feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, which is emptiness.
