Sharadvatiputra is a virtuous friend of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Blessed One: Venerable Blessed One, how is it that a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, upon hearing this teaching of the Perfection of Wisdom, becomes frightened and terrified, and is unskilled in means with respect to the Perfection of Wisdom, and is in the clutches of evil friends? After he said this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Sharadvatiputra: Sharadvatiputra, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cultivates the Perfection of Wisdom, being separated from the mental activities associated with omniscience, and also focuses on the Perfection of Wisdom, and also generates pride because of it. Similarly, cultivating the Perfection of Dhyana, the Perfection of Diligence, the Perfection of Patience, the Perfection of Morality, the Perfection of Generosity, and also focusing on those perfections up to the Perfection of Generosity, and also generating pride because of the Perfection of Generosity.

The venerable Sharadvatiputra then said this: "Venerable Bhagavan, how is it that a Bodhisattva is completely seized by evil friends? By what kind of evil friends is he seized, so that upon hearing the teaching of the Perfection of Wisdom, he becomes frightened and terrified?" Having said this, the Bhagavan said to the venerable Sharadvatiputra: "Sharadvatiputra, in this case, the evil friend of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva causes him to be separated from the Perfection of Wisdom and causes his aspiration to be reversed. Similarly, he causes him to be separated from the Perfection of Dhyana, the Perfection of Virya, the Perfection of Kshanti, the Perfection of Shila, and the Perfection of Dana, and causes his aspiration to be reversed. They say: 'O son of good family, you should not train in these.' Why? Because these perfections are not spoken and taught by the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones, but are self-made by poets. They say: 'You should not listen to these, you should not hold them, you should not understand them, you should not recite them, you should not pay attention to them, and you should not teach them to others.' Sharadvatiputra, that should be recognized as the evil friend of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, the evil friend of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva transforms into the guise of a Buddha, a wicked Mara, and comes to the Bodhisattva, saying: 'O son of good family, what good does this Perfection of Wisdom do for you?' Similarly, 'What good does the Perfection of Dhyana do? What good does the Perfection of Virya do? What good does the Perfection of Kshanti do? What good does the Perfection of Shila do? What good does the Perfection of Dana do?' They do not point out the actions of the Mara that separate from the six perfections, nor do they speak of the faults of the Mara. Sharadvatiputra, that should be recognized as the evil friend of a Bodhisattva Mahasattva.
