Having abandoned the two extremes, what is the nature of seeking to enter the Middle Way? What is the nature of abandonment? What is the nature of manifest realization? How should the nature of meditation be viewed? After this request, the Blessed One said to Maitreya Bodhisattva: Maitreya Bodhisattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, having abandoned the two extremes, thus entering the Middle Way, whatever is form, it is neither completely known nor completely unknown, that itself is its complete knowledge. Whatever is feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, and even the dharmas of the Buddhas, it is neither completely known nor completely unknown, that itself is its complete knowledge. Whatever is form, it is neither abandoned nor not abandoned, that itself is its abandonment. Whatever is feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, and even the dharmas of the Buddhas, it is neither abandoned nor not abandoned, that itself is its abandonment. Whatever is form, it is neither manifestly realized nor not manifestly realized, that itself is its manifest realization. Whatever is form, it is neither meditating on the path for the sake of abandonment, nor not meditating, that itself is its meditation. Similarly, this should also be applied to feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, and even the dharmas of the Buddhas. After this was said, Maitreya Bodhisattva said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, what is the Nirvana of a Bodhisattva who practices the Perfection of Wisdom, possessing such seeking, abandonment, manifest realization, and meditation? After this request, the Blessed One said to Maitreya Bodhisattva: Maitreya, the Nirvana of Bodhisattvas is profound! Extremely profound! After this was said, Maitreya Bodhisattva said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, for what reason is the Nirvana of Bodhisattvas so profound and extremely profound?

Venerable One, the Blessed One said: Maitreya, the nirvana of bodhisattvas is such that it is neither nirvana nor non-nirvana. Therefore, it is called profound and supremely profound. After he had spoken thus, the bodhisattva Maitreya said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, how is it that the nirvana of bodhisattvas is neither nirvana nor non-nirvana? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, because one does not completely abandon samsara, having started from the benefit of others, it is not nirvana. Because one does not completely abandon nirvana, having started from the benefit of oneself, it is also not non-nirvana. After he had spoken thus, the bodhisattva Maitreya said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if a bodhisattva does not completely abandon samsara, having started from the benefit of others, how can this not become a complete abandonment of nirvana, since samsara has not been completely abandoned? Blessed One, if a bodhisattva does not completely abandon nirvana, having started from the benefit of oneself, how can this not become a complete abandonment of samsara? The Blessed One said: Maitreya, here, when a bodhisattva practices the perfection of wisdom, he does not perceive samsara as samsara itself, nor does he perceive nirvana as nirvana itself. Because he does not perceive it in that way, like that, samsara and nirvana are equal, and therefore become equal. Why is that? Like that, because he does not perceive samsara as samsara itself, he will not become weary of samsara. Similarly, because he does not perceive nirvana as nirvana itself, he will also not fall away from nirvana, and similarly, he will not fall away in samsara. Having abided in the sphere of non-perception in that way, one should understand by this reasoning that one neither completely abandons samsara nor completely abandons nirvana. After he had spoken thus, the bodhisattva Maitreya said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, then bodhisattva
