A Bodhisattva practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, abiding in the realm of non-discrimination, does not change in that just as he has not abandoned Samsara, so too there is no taking of Samsara; just as he has not abandoned Nirvana, so too there is no taking of Nirvana. World-Honored One, if there is no taking, how is it not abandoning? The World-Honored One said: Maitreya, I do not say, 'I take Samsara in this way,' or 'I do not take Samsara.' Maitreya, however, a Bodhisattva practicing the Perfection of Wisdom, having obtained mastery over the mind with the wisdom that focuses on the realm of non-discrimination, being skilled in means, for the sake of showing Samsara, in the ten directions of the world, in worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, to those Bodhisattvas who have completely passed into Nirvana, I do not say that they abandon Samsara. I say that because they abide in the realm of emptiness where there is no object of focus, I do not say that they abandon Nirvana. Having spoken thus, the Bodhisattva Maitreya said to the World-Honored One: World-Honored One, how should one view the nature of non-discrimination as a whole? The World-Honored One said: Maitreya, whatever is form, whatever is feeling, whatever is perception, whatever are formations, whatever is consciousness, and whatever exists up to the Dharmas of the Buddhas, and whatever is the emptiness of the Dharmas of the Buddhas, and the essence of those Dharmas and emptiness, and the non-duality of existence and non-existence, which is free from elaboration, that, Maitreya, should be viewed as the nature of non-discrimination as a whole. Having spoken thus, the Bodhisattva Maitreya said to the World-Honored One: World-Honored One, do all Hearers definitively and permanently abide in Nirvana? The World-Honored One said: Maitreya, that is not so. Why is that? Maitreya, this world is manifold in its realms, it is many realms; in that world of manifold realms and many realms, many kinds and natures of sentient beings are seen. Maitreya, those who from the very beginning seek the distinction of goodness, the goodness of

There are also such types of sentient beings who will obtain excellent qualities. There are also those types who, from the very beginning, seek inferior qualities, and are content with obtaining those inferior qualities. There are also those types who, from the very beginning, seek inferior qualities, and upon obtaining them, recognize their inferiority and are not content with just that, but then seek excellent qualities and will obtain them. When this was said, Bodhisattva Maitreya said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how can the third type of sentient being, who has attained Arhatship and seeks unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, obtain it since there is no rebirth? For the Blessed One has not said that the practice itself is its rebirth." The Blessed One said: "Maitreya, I do not assert that its rebirth is transformed by the power of karma and afflictions. I assert that its rebirth is inconceivable, and is emanation and complete dedication." When this was said, Bodhisattva Maitreya said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, it is wonderful that Bodhisattvas, great beings, who from the very beginning seek excellent qualities and will obtain them, have such great thoughts and superior aspirations! Blessed One, what are the great thoughts of Bodhisattvas? What are the superior aspirations themselves?" The Blessed One said: "Maitreya, Bodhisattvas do not seek to be Indra, Brahma, guardians of the world, or universal monarchs, nor do they seek all the perfections of the world. They do not cling to or grasp at these things. This is the great thought of Bodhisattvas. Bodhisattvas are like this: they do not completely abandon activity, so they share with all sentient beings the happiness of non-attachment, the happiness of non-grasping, and the happiness of Nirvana.

Wishing for this, and generating aspiration for unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment, this should be regarded as the extraordinary intention of their greatness. After thus speaking, the Bodhisattva Maitreya addressed the Bhagavan as follows: Bhagavan, the dharmas of Bodhisattvas are wondrous and amazing. The trainings of Bodhisattvas are wondrous and amazing. Bhagavan, a son or daughter of good family, wishing to train in these wondrous and amazing dharmas of Bodhisattvas, should generate the mind for unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. From the Eighty Thousand Verse Prajñāpāramitā, the chapter called "The Excellent Differentiation of the Bodhisattva's Training," the eighty-third.
