When a great courageous Bodhisattva practices the path of enlightenment, he does not abide in anything. He does not abide in that way of non-abiding, and even when practicing the perfection of generosity, he does not abide in it. He does not abide in the perfection of morality. He does not abide in the perfection of patience. He does not abide in the perfection of diligence. He does not abide in the perfection of meditation. He does not abide in the perfection of wisdom. He enters the first dhyana, but he does not abide in it. Why is that? Because the first dhyana is empty by its very nature of meditation, and the one who enters into it is also empty, and the aspects by which one enters into it are also empty. Similarly, the second dhyana, the third dhyana, and up to the fourth dhyana, and similarly, loving-kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity, and up to the formless attainments, and the eight liberations, and the nine progressive abidings, even if one attains the fruit of stream-entry, one does not abide in it. Even if one attains the fruit of once-returner, one does not abide in it. Even if one attains the fruit of non-returner, one does not abide in it. Even if one attains the state of Arhat, one does not abide in it. Even if one attains the state of Pratyekabuddha, one does not abide in it. Subhuti asked: Blessed One, why does one not abide? The Buddha replied: Subhuti, one does not abide in two ways. What are the two? In those fruits, what is to be abided in, by what is to be abided in, and the nature of what is to be abided in is non-existent. And not being content with just that, up to the complete and perfect enlightenment of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, it is not that I should not attain the fruit of stream-entry, but even after I have attained the fruit of stream-entry, I should not abide in it. It is not that I should not attain up to the state of Pratyekabuddha, but even if I attain the state of Pratyekabuddha, I should not abide in it. Why is that? Because, since I first generated the mind, unsurpassed also

Because of thinking that one does not generate any other thoughts except for perfect and complete enlightenment. Why is that? Like this, from the time a Bodhisattva Mahasattva generates the first thought, he does not generate any other thoughts except for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Similarly, from the time a Bodhisattva enters the faultless state until the ten bhumis, there is no mental wandering, and he does not generate any other thoughts except for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Subhuti, no matter how much a Bodhisattva Mahasattva engages in coarse actions with body, speech, and mind, it is not different from the mind of enlightenment. A Bodhisattva Mahasattva abides in the mind of enlightenment and cultivates the path of enlightenment without mental wandering. Then, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if all dharmas are unborn, then how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cultivate the path of enlightenment? After he said this, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Subhuti, all dharmas are unborn. How is that? For those who do not manifestly accumulate, all dharmas are unborn. After he said this, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, whether the Tathagatas appear or do not appear, is the abiding nature of dharmas not abiding? The Blessed One replied: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. Whether the Tathagatas appear or do not appear, the abiding nature of dharmas is indeed abiding. However, for those who do not understand the abiding nature of dharmas, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva cultivates the path of enlightenment, and through that path, he completely liberates beings from samsara. Then, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One:

Venerable One, will enlightenment be attained by the path of what has come into being? He replied: That is not so. He asked: Venerable One, then will enlightenment be attained by the path of what has not come into being? He replied: That is not so. He asked: Venerable One, then will enlightenment be attained by the path of what has both come into being and not come into being? He replied: That is not so. He asked: Venerable One, then will enlightenment be attained by the path of what is neither come into being nor not come into being? He replied: That is not so. He asked: Venerable One, then how will enlightenment be attained? After he had asked this, the Venerable One said this to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, enlightenment is not attained by the path, nor is it not by the path, for enlightenment itself is the path, and the path itself is enlightenment. After he had said this, the venerable Subhuti said this to the Venerable One: Venerable One, if enlightenment itself is the path, and the path itself is enlightenment, then will not the Bodhisattva Mahasattva attain enlightenment? Then why is it taught that the Thus-Gone One, the Foe-Destroyer, the Perfectly Awakened One, is endowed with the thirty-two marks of a great man, the ten powers of the Thus-Gone One, the four fearlessnesses, the four analytical knowledges, the four immeasurables, the four formless absorptions, and up to the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha? After he had asked this, the Venerable One said this to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, what do you think? Does a Buddha think to attain enlightenment? He replied: Venerable One, that is not so, for the Buddha himself is enlightenment, and enlightenment itself is the Buddha, so the Buddha does not attain enlightenment. He replied: Subhuti, whatever you say, "Then, will the Bodhisattva Mahasattva attain enlightenment? Will it not be one?" Subhuti, for this, the Bodhisattva
