Chapter Seven, Number Seventeen: The Chapter on Demonstrating the Complete Purity of the Buddha-field. Chapter Seven, Number Seventeen: The Chapter on Demonstrating the Complete Purity of the Buddha-field. Then, the venerable Subhuti thought to himself: Where does the Bodhisattva Mahasattva abide, and what is the path of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva by which he puts on such armor? Then, the Blessed One, knowing with his mind the complete understanding of the mind of the venerable Subhuti, spoke thus to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, the six perfections are the path of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. The thirty-seven factors of enlightenment are the path of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. The fourteen emptinesses, the nine successively abiding samapattis, the eight liberations, the ten powers of the Tathagata, and the eighteen unshared qualities of the Buddha are the path of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Subhuti, all other dharmas are also the path of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva. Subhuti, what do you think? Is there anything that a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should not learn, or any dharma that, if not learned, would lead to the complete enlightenment of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment? Subhuti, there is nothing that a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should not learn, and there is no dharma by which a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, without learning all dharmas, could attain omniscience. Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, if all dharmas are empty, how should a Bodhisattva Mahasattva learn all dharmas? Blessed One, should he say, 'This is known,' or 'These are understood,' or 'These dharmas are worldly,' or 'These are supramundane,' or 'These are with outflows,' or 'These are without outflows,' or 'These are conditioned,' or 'These are unconditioned,' or 'These are the dharmas of ordinary beings,' or 'These are the dharmas of arhats,' or 'These are the dharmas of solitary Buddhas'? By doing so, would he not be turning the unelaborated into the elaborated, or turning the non-one into one? When he had thus inquired,

The Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, it is so, it is so. All dharmas are empty. Subhuti, if all dharmas were not empty, then Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas would not realize unexcelled, perfect and complete enlightenment. Subhuti, it is precisely because all dharmas are empty that Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas realize unexcelled, perfect and complete enlightenment. Subhuti, you also say this: If all dharmas are empty, how do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas understand so many dharmas? How do they understand these dharmas? How do they differentiate between the dharmas of ordinary beings, the dharmas of Arhats, and the dharmas of Pratyekabuddhas? Subhuti, do you think these beings know that all dharmas are empty? If they knew, then Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, having studied all dharmas, would not attain all-knowingness. Subhuti, it is precisely because these beings do not know that all dharmas are empty that Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, having realized unexcelled, perfect and complete enlightenment, establish all dharmas and teach the Dharma to sentient beings. Subhuti, when a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva practices the path of enlightenment, from the very beginning, one should carefully examine, thinking that apart from manifesting engagement with this, there is no dharma that can become an object of focus by its own nature. When one carefully examines the nature of those dharmas in this way, there is no attachment to any dharma, whether it be the perfections, the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, the fruit of stream-entry, the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of non-returning, Arhatship itself, self-enlightenment, or unexcelled, perfect and complete enlightenment. Why is that? Because all dharmas are the nature of all dharmas.

Empty by its very nature, emptiness should not be fixated upon as emptiness. Since emptiness is without an object of focus, what need is there to mention fixating upon emptiness with emptiness? Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should abide without fixating on all dharmas in this way. Abiding in that training, he observes the conduct of all sentient beings, thinking, "These sentient beings are fixated on what does not exist." Then, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thinks thus: "Alas, I must liberate these sentient beings from fixating on what is non-existent." Therefore, skilled in means, he abides in the Perfection of Wisdom and says this: "Sentient beings, come here! Give alms! Thus, you will not be troubled by enjoyments. Do not be arrogant with those enjoyments either, for there is no essence in them." Thus he instructs. Likewise, keep moral discipline, but do not be arrogant with that moral discipline either, for there is no essence in it. Thus he instructs regarding moral discipline. Likewise, be patient. Likewise, be diligent. Likewise, enter into meditative stabilization. Likewise, cultivate wisdom, but do not be arrogant with wisdom either, for there is no essence in it. Thus he instructs. Likewise, cultivate up to the fruit of Stream-enterer, likewise, Once-returner, likewise, Non-returner, likewise, Arhatship, likewise, Solitary Enlightenment, likewise, up to all the Buddhadharmas. Do not be arrogant with those dharmas either, for there is no essence in them. Thus he instructs. Thus instructing and subsequently teaching, even though practicing the path to enlightenment, he does not fixate on any dharma. Why is that? Because all dharmas are without fixation. If one takes the nature of emptiness, there is no such nature by which one can fixate. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva should thus
