Where does one abide to enter into and arise from the eight liberations, both in accordance with and not in accordance with the order? What are the eight? Subhuti, here, a bodhisattva-mahasattva, being possessed of form, contemplates forms; this is the first liberation. Not having the perception of form internally, one contemplates external forms; this is the second liberation. Having realized the liberation of beauty with the body, one dwells having cultivated it; this is the third liberation. Having completely transcended all perceptions of form, with the perceptions of resistance having ceased, and not attending to various perceptions, one thinks, 'Space is infinite.' Thus, one dwells having cultivated the sphere of infinite space; this is the fourth liberation. Having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space, one thinks, 'Consciousness is infinite.' Thus, one dwells having cultivated the sphere of infinite consciousness; this is the fifth liberation. Having completely transcended the sphere of infinite consciousness, one thinks, 'There is nothing.' Thus, one dwells having cultivated the sphere of nothingness; this is the sixth liberation. Having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness, one dwells having cultivated the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception; this is the seventh liberation. Having completely transcended the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, one dwells having realized and cultivated the cessation of perception and feeling with the body; this is the eighth liberation. One enters into and arises from these eight liberations, both in accordance with and not in accordance with the order. Furthermore, one enters into and arises from the nine successive meditative absorptions, both in accordance with and not in accordance with the order. What are the nine? Subhuti, here, a bodhisattva-mahasattva, secluded from desires, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, with initial application and sustained application, born of seclusion, possessing joy and bliss, cultivates and dwells in the first dhyana; and similarly, applying this, cultivates and dwells up to the fourth dhyana; and further,

Having completely transcended the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, up to abiding in the attainment of the cessation of perception and feeling. He enters and emerges from these nine successive meditative stabilizations in accordance with and not in accordance with the proper order. Having thus distinguished these eight liberations and the nine successive meditative stabilizations, he enters into the meditative stabilization called the Lion's Arising. Subhuti, what is the meditative stabilization of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva called the Lion's Arising? Subhuti, here, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, secluded from desires, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, with thought and examination, born of seclusion, abides having attained the first dhyana with joy and pleasure, and abides having attained up to the cessation of perception and feeling, and having arisen from the meditative stabilization of cessation, abides having attained the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and having arisen from the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, abides having attained up to the first dhyana. Having thus distinguished this meditative stabilization of the Lion's Arising, he enters into the Transcending meditative stabilization. Subhuti, what is the Transcending meditative stabilization of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva? Subhuti, here, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, secluded from desires, secluded from unwholesome dharmas, with thought and examination, born of seclusion, abides having attained the first dhyana with joy and pleasure, and having arisen from the first dhyana, thus trains, and abides having attained up to the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, and having arisen from the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, enters into the cessation of perception and feeling, and having arisen from the meditative stabilization of cessation, enters into the second dhyana, and having arisen from the second dhyana, enters into the meditative stabilization of cessation, and having arisen from the meditative stabilization of cessation, enters into the third dhyana, and the third dhyana
