Chapter Sixty-two: Entering into Transcendence Chapter Sixty-two: Entering into Transcendence Then, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, how does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of morality, fully embrace the perfection of generosity?" After he said this, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of morality, does not hold the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground as supreme by whatever discipline of body, speech, and mind. Abiding in the perfection of morality, he does not kill sentient beings, does not take what is not given, does not engage in sexual misconduct, does not speak falsely, does not speak harshly, does not speak divisively, does not speak idly, does not become greedy, does not become filled with harmful thoughts, and does not hold wrong views. Abiding in that perfection of morality, whatever he gives, he gives food to those who desire food, drink to those who desire drink, incense to those who desire incense, vehicles to those who desire vehicles, clothes to those who desire clothes, garlands of flowers to those who desire garlands of flowers, ointments to those who desire ointments, beds to those who desire beds, cushions to those who desire cushions, lamps to those who desire lamps, and utensils to those who desire utensils, even any human utensils. Having given, he also dedicates the giving to unsurpassed perfect complete enlightenment, having made it common to all sentient beings, and he does not dedicate such dedication to the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, acting in the perfection of morality, fully embraces the perfection of generosity." He said: "Blessed One, Bodhisattva

Furthermore, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of morality, fully embrace the perfection of patience? The Buddha said: Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abides in the perfection of morality, even when all sentient beings cut off all their limbs and joints, not even a single thought of Bodhicitta of that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will be disturbed, nor will they become angry, nor will harmful thoughts arise. Instead, they will think: 'All sentient beings cutting off my limbs and joints is indeed a great gain for me.' Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding in the perfection of morality fully embraces the perfection of patience. He reported: World Honored One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of morality, fully embrace the perfection of diligence? The Buddha said: Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thinks: 'I shall liberate all sentient beings from the cycle of rebirth and place them in the realm of nectar.' They do not abandon the diligence of body and mind. Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding in the perfection of morality fully embraces the perfection of diligence. He reported: World Honored One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of morality, fully embrace the perfection of meditative concentration? The Buddha said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva cultivates and abides in the first dhyana, and further cultivates and abides in the second dhyana, the third dhyana, and the fourth dhyana, without particularly clinging to the ground of the Hearers or the ground of the Solitary Buddhas. Instead, they think: 'I shall abide in this perfection of meditative concentration and liberate all sentient beings from the cycle of rebirth.' Subhuti, in this way, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding in the perfection of morality fully embraces the perfection of meditative concentration.

How do I hold it? Asked: World Honored One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of morality, hold the perfection of wisdom? The Buddha said: Subhuti, here, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of morality, does not see any dharma as conditioned, except that all dharmas do not deviate from suchness. He does not see it as unconditioned. He does not see things as conditioned. He does not see non-things as unconditioned. He does not see characteristics as conditioned. He does not see no characteristics as unconditioned. He does not see any dharma as existing or non-existing. Because of this perfection of wisdom, and skillful means, he will not fall into the ground of a Hearer or a Solitary Buddha. Subhuti, thus, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of morality, holds the perfection of wisdom. Subhuti asked: World Honored One, how does a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, abiding in the perfection of patience, hold the perfection of generosity? The Buddha said: Subhuti, here, from the moment a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva first generates the mind until he sits on the seat of enlightenment, if all sentient beings scold, slander, or cut off limbs such as hands and feet, then the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva abiding in the perfection of patience will think: I should give to these sentient beings, and I should not fail to give. Thinking thus, he gives food to those sentient beings who desire food; he gives drink to those who desire drink. In this way, he gives even any human necessities. And he shares this root of virtue with all sentient beings, dedicating it completely to the all-knowing wisdom. And he, the dedication in which the three separate thoughts of from where to dedicate, to what to dedicate, and to where to dedicate do not arise, is like this.
