If those Arhats, perfectly complete Buddhas, say: 'You have not obtained the forbearance of non-arising dharmas by which you will be prophesied to unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment. You do not possess those aspects, those signs, those characteristics with which a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will be prophesied to unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment.' Even if they say this. Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, having heard that sound, does not become dejected, does not become afraid, his mind does not change, and he does not become frightened, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should know: 'I have been prophesied to unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment by those Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly complete Buddhas.' Why is that? It is because I possess those dharmas with which a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will be prophesied to unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment. Subhuti, if an evil demon, in the guise of a Buddha, comes to a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva and says: 'You have not been prophesied to unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment; you will definitely attain the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground.' Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva thinks: 'Alas! This is a demon, or a person blessed by a demon, who has come in the guise of a Buddha. The Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly complete Buddha, does not cause a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva to adhere to the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground.' Subhuti, that Bodhisattva should be known to be prophesied. Subhuti, if an evil demon, in the guise of a Buddha, comes to a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is reading and reciting extensively expanded Sutras, and says: 'These Sutras in which you are engaging are not those of the Buddhas and Hearers.'

are not spoken by the Buddha, but these sutras are spoken by the demons.' If this is said, Subhuti, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva would think, 'Alas! Who is it that separates me from the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment? Is it an evil demon? Or is it a person blessed by a demon?' Subhuti, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will be recognized as having been predicted to Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment by those past Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfect Buddhas, and that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva will be recognized as abiding in the stage of non-retrogression. Why is that? Subhuti, it is because those aspects, those signs, and those characteristics of the non-retrogressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas are present in him. Subhuti, the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who possesses those aspects, those signs, and those characteristics should be recognized as non-retrogressing. Subhuti, furthermore, the non-retrogressing Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who practices in the Perfection of Wisdom, for the sake of upholding the sacred Dharma, even gives up himself, and also gives up his life. Subhuti, that Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, for the sake of upholding the sacred Dharma, strives in the same way that the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the past, future, and present uphold the sacred Dharma. Why is that? It is because he thinks thus: 'If I uphold the sacred Dharma, I will make offerings to the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, of the past, future, and present, and I will also uphold their sacred Dharma.' Therefore, for the sake of what Dharma does he give up himself? It is the Dharma that the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfect Buddha teaches, saying that all dharmas are empty. However, some foolish people deny, saying, 'This is not Dharma, this is not Discipline, this is not the Teacher's teaching.'

Shariputra, for that Dharma, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva even gives up himself. Shariputra, in this regard, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should train like this: 'Among the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Ones who will appear in the future, may I also be counted among them. May I also receive a prophecy there. For the sake of the Dharma, I shall also give up myself, and I shall also give up my life, that is also my Dharma.' Thus, one should train. Shariputra, seeing this power of meaning, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva even gives up himself for the sake of the supreme Dharma. Shariputra, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva who possesses those forms, those signs, and those marks should be known as irreversible. Shariputra, furthermore, the irreversible Bodhisattva Mahasattva has no doubt or hesitation regarding the Dharma taught by the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One. He completely upholds all that is spoken by those Buddhas, the Bhagavat. Having upheld it in this way, he does not forget it. What is the reason for this? It is because he has obtained a dharani. Then, the Venerable Shariputra said this to the Bhagavat: 'Bhagavat, by obtaining which dharani, will the Bodhisattva Mahasattva not forget the Sutras spoken by the Tathagata?' The Bhagavat replied: 'Shariputra, by obtaining the dharani of retention, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not forget the Sutras spoken by the Tathagata.' Shariputra asked: 'Bhagavat, is it only that there is no doubt about what is spoken by the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, or is there also no doubt about what is spoken by the Shravakas? Or is there also no doubt about what is spoken by the Devas? Or is there also no doubt about what is spoken by the Nagas? Or is there also no doubt about what is spoken by the Yakshas? Or is there also no doubt about what is spoken by the Gandharvas? Or is there also no doubt about what is spoken by the Asuras? Or is there also no doubt about what is spoken by the Garudas? Or is there also no doubt about what is spoken by the Kinnaras?'
